BREAKING - Royals Trade Mark Teahen

Make sure you read all the way to the updates... An interesting day, for sure.  Original post follows...

-------------------------------------

According to the NY Daily News:

While the Yankees and Phillies continued to wage their World Series battle Wednesday night, the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals were making a trade.

The Daily News learned the White Sox have agreed to send second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields to the Royals for Mark Teahen, who is expected to replace Jermaine Dye as Chicago's right fielder.

Dayton Moore doesn't wait around.  The man pulled the trigger on last year's Jacobs deal hours after the World Series and it looks again like he's getting a head start on the Hot Stove.

And unlike last year's first trade which was a stinker, this one has some potential.

I'll have some more analysis later - pending confirmation from the Royals - but the most important thing to note is both Getz and Fields are under club control for the next two seasons.  That makes them inexpensive.  Teahen made almost $4 million last year and was sure to get a bump in his final year of eligibility for arbitration.

This certainly raises some questions.  What happens to Alberto Callaspo at second?  Getz isn't that much better defensively and Callaspo has a stronger bat.  Where will Fields play?  He's not a good defender, but will the Royals move him or Alex Gordon to first and then shift Butler to DH?  Or will Fields be the primary designated hitter?

My instant reaction says getting two cost controlled players for one expensive, mediocre talent makes this a win for the Royals.

If the Daily News report is accurate and this deal is done, it's safe to say GMDM is off to a much better start this off season.

UPDATE:  The Chicago Sun-Times says the White Sox have confirmed the deal.

UPDATE #2:  Dayton Moore says, "There's nothing to announce."

UPDATE #3:  Mark Teahen is sleeping in his Royal PJs.

UPDATE #4: The Chicago Tribune says nothing has been confirmed.

Craig - like you, my detailed analysis will have to wait on this one, but just on the surface this is a very average borderline regular being traded for two younger players with major league experience. Quick reaction: love it.

Getz, I think, has the potential to be much better defensively than Callaspo. I think the move is Getz to second, Callaspo to DH with Fields taking Teahen's role as backup corner outfielder/corner infielder...at least for now.

i was wondering about Fields myself... some speculate he'll assume an outfield spot. But it certainly couldn't hurt to lite a bit of a fire under Gordon's arse at 3rd. Not that Fields is better than Gordon by any means. But I think I like the trade.

Fields can't hit or field and Getz can't hit. Other than saving M this trade does nothing to make the team better.

I can't say I hated this trade because Teahen needed to go.

I think this is a fantastic trade. Getz is not a great defensive 2B, but. . . he is a TON better than Callaspo. This trade allows to shift our defense around and become a far better defensive team. In the analysis of the bullpens the other day, we looked at how bad our bullpen was and it looked like part of the problem was the defense behind them. Fields could play RF and get Guillen out of the field, Getz is better defensively than Callaspo. Callaspo could play 3rd and move Gordon to 1B. Butler could DH as well. I think that the biggest thing that we got here was a little bit of payroll flexibilty. Maybe we not could trade Guillen and assume 1/2 of his salary this year and get something back in return. This trade made our entire pitching staff better than last year!

I saw Getz play against KC in spring training. The kid has explosive speed and is a bit of a terror on the basepaths. If I recall, he doesn't have much power but can pepper the ball all over the place. My instincts tell me that he has to be a much better 2bman that Callaspo. Not sure what stats say. However, Albert has the better speed. Getz led off for the Sox in that spring training game that I'm talking about. He could be a legit leadoff man. Maybe KC is considering moving Callaspo. By all means, sell high.

I meant that Albert has the better bat, not the better speed.

have to like this deal, at worst we cut payroll and didn't sacrifiec value.
Getz is an upgrade defensively at 2b (he's not a great defender -more average but better than Callaspo)
he also adds potential on base, I think as he matures he is above avg on base, improves our speed and in minors suggested that 10-12 homerun pop not out of question

Now where does Callaspo move to? super utility spot that was Teahens... trade

Fields -not sure where he fits but I'm good with it at worst he's depth and is the cheaper RH version of Mike Jacobs - nice pop low average horrid defender. Jacobs guarenteed non tender now.

Fields could move to 1b or pt DH if he hits and stays healthy. I guess it's not out of the question Gordon could be on the block but I don't see us selling low. Fields replaces Jacobs. He's the kind of AAAA hidden talent we should be seeking.

This is a good trade

If this does indeed go down, (as of 3:20 PST it hasn't been announced as official) it only signals more moves via trade, to come. I would bet that GMDM is attempting to sell high with Callespo. If he could actually move Guillen for more then a bag of used game balls I'd be shocked.

Good trade. Something else has to be up. This is a great chance to move Callaspo to LF. No way does he become a DH. So Guillen/DeJesus/Gordon have to be going somewhere.

You know Jacobs won't be traded.

Unless he's done a deal for Butler, which wouldn't surprise me.

Taking money out of the picture - Did we just trade Teahen for two player worse than Teahen? I guess I'm not ready to call Getz the solution at 2B. I will say that I was done watching Teahen in the everyday lineup, so I guess that's a good thing.
