i think you're pretty right-on with your assessment of how this could play out...my thought is to trade callaspo + a mid-level pitcher prospect (melville, hayenga, osuna) for a stud 2B/SS, then make one significant FA pickup to fill a hole in the OF, and maybe a low-level signing for a 4th/5th starter.

we should be able to fill our bullpen with guys already in the system.

the only problem spot is at C, and we may have to pick up a solid defensive guy on the cheap.

When the dust settles at the end of 2010, the Royals are likely to be somewhere around 'plus 2 or 3 million' in 'new salary' to spend - after you jettison Guillen et.al. and pay Greinke et.al. However, you get another $12 million after 2011 when Meche's contract is up and, if you pick up DDJ's 2011 option, $6 million when that contract expires. Between the two years, the Royals theoretically would have money to sign one 'impact' free agent.

The key move to be made is trading some combination of decent players (the Meche-Callaspo-Bannister package in 2011 for example) for a young player with All-Star potential and then augmenting that trade with your one quality free agent acquisiton.

Good point Nick! Everyone talks about all the money coming off the books, but fail to recognize the fact that those guys you said are going to be getting significant raises. Like you said, there will be very little money to spend on free agents. Maybe that is a good thing. We can make do with what we have and wait on the low cost replacements.

Anyone have any word on when Arguelles may start pitching??

The money coming off the books vs money already spent next year on current talent leaves little to spend on a free agent unless the Royals significantly increase payroll. Greinke gets a raise, butler and aviles and hochevar all get raises.

%:

Texiera has a decent slider and a fastball around 90-92. He's been good in the minors (2.49 ERA and 8.7 k/9) although a touch wild (3.4 BB/9). Either way, he should be an improvement over Thompson.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Re-sign Wee Willie!

Well said Mr Dave,he's carrying this side at the minute!

Michael Cuddyer is on bereavement leave for a few days so that should give Billy plenty of time to streak ahead in the GIDP race....

So Thompson gets DFA'd,this Hawaian kid better be good, anybody got the word on him?

I didn't say Soria would get traded for a prospect, but an impact bat that is already in the bigs. We have some "can't miss" relievers in the minors, and if they carry the same stellar numbers in the bigs, I think this is how Dayton is going to fill out these last few open spots...trading Soria.

I'm actually hoping they re-sign Bloomy. He's a good utility player, shouldn't cost that much, and would cover the Royals all over the field.

Mr. Dave -

Good point on Farnsworth. Also Juan Cruz, Pods, Ankiel, and Bloomy come off for about $10M total.

No one wants to build this team around free agents but investing in one or two quality guys isn't the wrong thing to do.
