I think all this pseudo self-deprecation in regards posters not being "MLB players" etc is totally unnecessary & doesnt add anything to the debate,fb0252 makes a fair point even if somewhat sarcastically put!

As far as the main thrust of his arguement goes i have some sympathy for what he is saying but i dont understand how he is so convinced Pods can be resigned?GMDM was quite adamant from what i have heard that there was absolutley no chance of him re-signing?

As for some people on here saying the trade is better for the Royals in the PRESENT because Gordon gets to play in LF for two months i think that absolutely ridiculous, the only person/s that gains from Gordon being in left for two months is Gordon himself & his supporters, the rest of the team in the PRESENT have to suffer while we all see if he can learn the art or not?

We have allready had "bobbled by Gordon ",now we can add "Didnt play it very well" as stated by the sycophantic Ryan Lefevre on last nights broadcast to the very first play of the game!

Pods did as much as you could have dreamed of for a guy with his limited skills, but he was still just a guy (yeah, he hit .310, but no pop and host of caught stealing and pickoffs) and he was in the way. Wish him well. We didn't get much for him, but he wasn't worth much.

Now we need to get rid of Guillen or play Guillen and get rid of Ankiel. Either way frees up the DH for Kila. Guillen just sucks and paying Ankiel $3M+ to do what Maier can do better at $350K is insane. As Clark said it is time to cut Guillen lose for anything. Forget about the salary relief just get rid of him.

And forget about the Royals record. Just watch the farm system blossom. If Crow and Melville get untracked the Royals would have an unbelievably strong system.

I do like the trades of Callaspo and Pods, b/c it brought in 3 young pitchers and a possible back up catcher. Pods is not a great outfielder or baserunner, but he was the best outfielder and baserunner left on this team (minus DDJ). This team is going to look VERY ugly for the rest of the season, which is fine.

Gordon probably is not the answer in LF or RF, he is not a good hitter and he doesn't know how to read a fly ball to save his life. I hope he proves me wrong, but I am not holding my breath for it. I would really like to see what Lough, Parraz, or Dyson have to offer, and next year we could see what Robinson, Orlando, Ortiz, Smith, and Van Stratten.

I don't know how much money they will have after all the arbitrations and raises, but it doesn't seem like much. It would be nice to see Werth in RF, but I doubt that's possible. Another year of Greinke, Meche (?), Hoch, Banny, Davies, might just kill me, so it would be nice to see a new arm, whether its from the system (Monty, Duffy, Dwyer, Lamb), or if they can find a #2 starter in FA, I don't care.

As I sign off forever due to being completely unqualified as a baseball blog commenter because I was only good enough to play varsity baseball through high school as a pitcher and CF (and damn good hockey player if I do say so myself) and because I only coach baseball, I still stand by the fact Pods is a terrible OF.

Glad he was traded.

Podsednik was a decent player, but I'd rather have someone from AAA audition for a spot next year with a couple months of big league experience from this Fall. Even if we lose a couple more games this year, great! Maybe a better draft position.

We could still sign him up for next year, but the guy will be 35 next year. The guy will start declining in performance and speed. he will be 36 in two years when most of these great young performers are called up and will be even worse for wear at that point.

Of course you build a team around a 34 year old "average" player! Pods is going to develop into an elite athlete. It doesn't take a genius to realize that players skills don't truely start developing until they hit their mid 30's. By the time Pods is 40 he will probably be putting up Rickey Henderson type numbers and have the #1 selling jersey in the MLB. (of course I mean Hendersons #'s when he was in his 20's because unlike Pods, his numbers declined as he aged).

However, I have never played major league baseball myself so none of this really counts since the only people qualified to comment about baseball are those people who have played or currently are playing professional major league baseball.

Similarly, I can't tell if the guy who just cut my hair did a bad job or not because I've never been a barber. Even if I thought it was bad, my opinion wouldn't matter.

While I have never stepped on a major league athletic field, I can tell a superior outfielder from an average outfielder. In fact, for Royals' fans it is pretty easy. Last year, David DeJesus was a superior leftfielder. This year Podsednik was average at best. He is atrocious playing balls in the corner and extremely suspect on harder hit balls he has to go back on. Bottom line, his speed does not necessarily translate into plays made in the outfield.

Did Pods bring intangibles (work ethic, professionalism, etc.)? Certainly he did, but Dayton Moore was quoted as saying they doubted that he was going to resign with the Royals. As such, acquiring two players, one of whom (Pimentel) has real potential makes sense.

It makes even more sense as it allows the Royals to see Alex Gordon for two months everyday. Can he hit? I'm skeptical, but let's find out this year when we are fighting to finish out of last place than 'wondering' about it on Opening Day of 2011 when the Royals are hopefully going to be fighting for some place higher in the standings. Even if Gordon flops, the Royals are no worse off than if they had kept Pods and then not resigned him - they will still be needing two outfielders, but they will at least know that Gordon will not be one of them. Along the way, they added catching depth in the high minors and a live arm.

This isn't the deal of the century, but then, like it or not, Scott Podsednik (whose statistically irrelevant 12 caught stealings and 3 pickoffs basically reduce his on-base percentage by almost 40 points) is an average player - nothing more.

they got a 6'2" 170 lbs low A ball pitcher who probably stands 6'1 165 lbs in real life, and a redundant catcher for a highly conditioned 34 year old OF who'd proven time and again--such as the year 2005--that he can hit, hit in the clutch, and is reliable to move rallies along. and, last I checked, even the OP admits him to be an "average" OF. probably in real time he's a superior OF, but in Royaldom he "the rap". Complete misanalysis on Pods and his value to a winning organization, and what he might have brought in a trade, particularly if imaginatively packaged. I'd have kept him and tried to resign. You could go on and on with analysis in terms of competition, win-loss variables, baseball history and what sort of players supplement your power guys successfully, organizations who sign players to play and win instead of signing to flip at the trade deadline; players who are played with roles within a team instead of to "show case", and so on. The dodgers give GMDM 2 months worth of worthless prospects for one of the better lead offs in bb whose absence in rest of 2010 is likely to tank this team. unsure to blow too many trumpets over this.

I will agree with everyone that this was a good trade, now the post that talked about giving banny and Davies arbitration, would be the worst idea possible for the royals. Instead of trying to sign a high priced outfielder, why don't we go out and buy a plus arm for eight million a year. We all know we will not compete next year. So in 2012 when meche contract is up we have another 11 mil to spend on another plus arm, I'm not saying we going to get an ace but at least two other arms that won't have a consist 5 era every year. In 2012 we have hosmer, mustacis (spelled wrong), aviles, butler de Jesus kll (outfield probably rf) two vets at ss and lf and we might have a chance to compete, but that will never happen with Davies or banny. Our rotation will be greinke hoch, the 2 plus arms, and one of these up and coming arms.
