Moore did a great job getting something for nothing in my book. I do find it odd that a few years back we were trading relievers for supposed impact players, and now we’re trading to acquire relievers…

Roster construction and foresight are still huge weaknesses for Moore, but he made the right moves over the weekend to evaluate young talent. Now, he has to do it.

Clark:Now with a lot of new players and new talent, I am more interested in the off season. It will be interesting if Royals and DM can flip some of the young talent for ML talent.

Yr 5 is a make or break year for DM. He really needs to be able to convert his minor league assets into ML level players and a decent ML roster that combines offense, defense, speed, and power. We still don’t have a ML average SS, C, or CF. The only players he has traded for in the past weeks that is probably a ML average player is Tim Collins and maybe Sean O’Sullivan. People may disagree with me but having a lot of minor league fillers just doesn’t impress me.

We still have no speed, we still have no power bats especially RH, no offense, and even less power. And we have no above average players in the anchor positions.

Very happy with the fact that Ned Yost has got an extention to his contract,its nice to have a guy in charge who actualy knows what he’s doing,dont agree with everything he does,but his matter of fact no-nonsense manner is settling & uplifting which will be great for all the young talent coming through,afterall he’s being asked to make a silk purse out of a sows ear so good luck to him!

The last minute deadline moves were just the upbeat lift we needed as two players who were not favourites of the fans were moved on,its especially good cause Farnsworth who will allways be an enigma,to me looks to be carrying an injury & Ankiel will go down (& stay down) at the drop of a hat if the mood takes him!

Getting three players 26 & under sets the right tone & like others have said Collins is the main part of the deal but Blanco is a reliable player who will fit in nicely,giving cover for Gordon if his venture doesnt pan out well,i felt a lot happier with Maier at centre last night,making Gordon at left a lot more tolerable as a total experiment!

SL – I think your analysis of the trade is dead on: it really was Ankiel & Farnsworth for Collins…..not that that’s a bad thing. Blanco is a serviceable, filler type outfielder (better than Jai Miller I suppose – different, but similar value to Maier) who gives the organization someone to fill the gap in the outfield if they are able to move Guillen and/or Bloomquist through waivers.

All in all, I liked Moore’s performance this July. If O’Sullivan becomes just league average (i.e. better than Davies/Bannister), Collins becomes a integral member of the future bullpens and either Will Smith or Pimentel make it to the majors, these trades will be successful based on their own merits – not to mention the playing time for younger players they freed up.

As hard as it is to say this, I think it’s time to give GMDM some props. The guy went out and signed cheap, available pieces that seemed to make little sense for our team (I guess an argument could be made we needed one outfielder). At the time everyone killed the guy, myself included. However, he sold high on Pods and got young player for Ankiel and Farnsworth. Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate GMDM. By no means am I saying the guy’s great, but it’s starting to look like 2012 has been a plan from the beginning. Signing Meche through 2011 and Guillen through 2010 in essence gives us $23M to play with in 2012 (though probably more like $10-12M after arbitration cases and pay raises). This is the formula the Twins use year in and year out – use from within first and fill a hole or two with semi-pricey vets (ala O-Dog at second when they had little in the system). Again, I’m not putting him up for exec of the year, but it’s nice to feel like there is some semblance of a plan and we’re starting to see it come to fruition.

This trade is essentially Farnsworth, Ankiel and 1M for Tim Collins. Blanco is probably a defense only CF and Chavez is a very non-interesting reliever supposedly with power stuff but poor WHIP. We have plenty of that with Rupe and Marte in AAA. To me, lets hope Collins becomes that power lefty that anchors the bullpen in the future in 2011.

I hope Blanco can provide a stopgap before Dyson, Robinson, Orlando becomes the CF. A career sub 700 OPS is not interesting.

What will be more interesting is to see how the Royals start building the proper roster for 2011. We have holes in CF, 3B, and 2 to 3 starters to fill. Potential roster for 2011:

Best comment I’ve see on the net was from an Atlanta fan who was jazzed about Ankeil because “he hit .471 in his last two games!” Must’ve missed the other 30. I’m just sad I won’t get to watch him strike out with guys on base anymore. Meh about Farnsworth. He was usually solid for an inning, but not much more. What does it say about Hillman that he even toyed with the idea of making Kerosene a starter. In the words of my friend who’s a cubs fan, “good luck with that.” My only fear is GMDM will take these new guys and start them, once again forgetting our AAA guys.

Just my thoughts on the trade…

Jesse Chavez is awful. Good velocity but you NEVER know where its going. He had a chance at the start of the year to be a significant part to the Atlanta pen and he blew it from the very first outing. We’re basically having to take him along in this trade. I would much rather see our younger guys get a chance to fill Farnsworth’s role. Holland deserves a shot before Chavez IMO.

Blanco, like many others, I agree he is a utility outfield option. Collins in the long term could be pretty good. Atlanta got him in the Yunel Escobar trade a couple weeks ago but the Braves pitching stock is so deep that Collins was expendible.

Extremely lazy day at my house, but not so much with the Royals organization. After reading a bit about the three guys we got, I am pretty excited about Collins. Nothing to really get excited about with Blanco or Chavez, unless they were heading to AAA. But for them to take spots on the MLB team, I’m not to excited about. Anyway to get Ankiel and Farnsworth off this team is a good thing though.

I’m still up in the air with the Yost signing. This team is pretty horrible, but batting Kendall 2nd for over a month is just not right. Heck, when Guillen was on that hitting streak, he would have been the most perfect #2 hitter on this team. I would also have liked to see more Getz at 2B and Aviles at SS.
