I guess that this kind of goes along with talking about pitching. . . Why is it that everyone is calling for the Royals to go out in FA and try to sign a free agent #2 starter when we are a) not expected to do anything next year and b) we have quite a handful of pitching prospects that should be ready to get their shot in 2012? I really think that if we do decide to spend some money in free agency, we should look to sign a corner outfielder with some pop (I'm thinking of making a run at Werth). We do not seem to be looking at moving Moose, Myers, Hosmer, or Betemit to outfield so we really have ZERO power from our corner outfield. I know that Gordon has promised to "dominate" next season, but with him, DJ coming back from an injury (to his hand no less), Dyson, Maier, and Blanco. . . Our outfield is a joke and there doesn't seem to be anyone in line to provide any pop in 2012 either unless we explore the free agent market after next season and that crop of outfielders doesn't look to have anyone available either.

I say we try to lock Werth up for 3 years then we have him for next season which will be another down year, 2012 which we will start to see our prospects arrive and 2013 when maybe we can crawl into contention.

If we spend money on a #2 starter this offseason, if it is anyone worthwhile, they will want a multiyear deal and we could have a logjam for starters in 2012. Everyone talks about how Dayton gets impatient with the re-build and goes out and signs stop-gap players that end up blocking our prospects. That would be the case if we pursue a #2 starter this offseason. Spend money on where we will have holes in 2012 or 2013, not where we will have holes in 2011!

I don't usually agree with airgoesit, and i don't agree with your comment about Greinke, but i do agree with everything else you said. I believe Chen should be the pitcher of the year, mainly from where he started to where he ended (definitely helps he pitched a complete game shut out in his last start). I wouldn't have thought Chen would have been this good, but he was 1st on the team in ERA (expanding out to 3 decimals Greinkes ERA was 4.173 to Chens 4.169), he was 1st on the team in wins, and was only .13 from Greinkes WHIP. Now i agree that it would be hard for either Soria or Greinke to not win this award and i see Soria probably getting it, but would love to see Chen win it. C'mon Chen!

Pitcher of the year is a landside for Bruce Chen. Reason?
1. Performance vs. Expectation
2. Contribution to the team (Greinke is a fail in the teammate category, mail it in on your own dime, what happen to playing for your teammates? I lost a significant amount of respect for him at the end of the year. Trade him for people with talent AND heart. And a side note, NEVER tell me again how competitive he is. Truly competitive people don't EVER mail it in.)
3. Execution. Like it or not, Chen was our second best starting pitcher all year and remains so until proven otherwise.
