Kevin Goldstein likes the trade. Not certain if that is a reflection of his thinking on Greinke -- I remember in the podcast that he thinks of Greinke as not quite an ace -- or an appreciation of the return.

One thing is certain, he likes Odorizzi, slotting him in as the Royals' 9th best prospect heading into 2011, and our 5th best pitching prospect. Pretty much in line with where I thought he would rank, and certainly not so much an indictment of Odorizzi's talents as an indication of how strong our farm system is (Goldstein, for instance, says that Odorizzi would be an easy top-3 prospect in most other farm systems). Wow. Young pitchers are volatile commodities, but the descriptions of this kid range from quite good to glowing.

And for as much as Goldstein likes Odorizzi, he ranks Jeffress even higher, at #8 in our rankings. This is based on him being used as a reliever, and, I suppose, on the assumption that he will learn to throw strikes.

This deal is simply beyond the pale. Once again, instead of taking his time and pitting bidders one against the other he jumps on just about the first first deal offered. You got two guys who can really defend but probably won't hit enough to stay in the bigs, a starting pitcher who aspires to be a number 3, and rocket throwing reliever who might be a stud if he ever throws strikes.

With Greinke under contract for two more years you should be able to get more than this collection decent prospects.

This deal will cement GMDM's reputation as a guy who just can't function at the major league level.

I think I'm ok with this deal. That said, I have to wonder about a couple of items now:

1. Who is our #1 starter now.....Hochevar? Yikes!
2. Who is our starting rotation? I will project: Hoch, Mazzaro, Davies, O'Sullivan and Teaford.
3. So who is the odd man out? The OF will presumably be: Cabrera, Francouer and Cain. So does Gordon go back to 3B? If so (and assuming Betemit is a utility guy now) where does Aviles end up? Aviles to 2B? Ok....so Getz is out? Gordon? What about Blanco?

Over/Under: 67 wins next season?

I want to say over but with so much unproven talent and 5 question marks in the rotation, I'm leaning towards another dismal year(s) for the Royals. Is it 2013 yet?

I think this is a very above average deal for the Royals. We got a solid everyday shortstop that will have huge impact in the field and has the potential to be a way above average shortstop if his hitting comes around. We got a center fielder that will also play the field well and his bat is solid, he hit above .300 in his first 43 games in the majors, and will continue to improve. We got a pitcher that has the ability to be a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy for a team that could have one of the best rotations in baseball in a couple of years. And then throw in the fact we received a pitcher that has some of the best pure stuff in the game and could be one of the elite closers if he gets his head right.
Put it this way, if even just 2 or 3 of the guys reaches almost full potential this can be considered a very good deal for the royals. We not only got a few parts we needed but we also added even more depth to an already stacked system. GMDM knows exactly what he wants to do with these guys and there is a reason he choose them.

Thought I posted this, but must have deleted it.

ESPN writers are pissing me off today. Marchland wrote this: "Soria, like Grienke, has the Yankees on his no-trade list, but this is for strategic reasons, not a fear of New York."

(A) This business about Greinke being afraid to pitch in NY is absurd, mean spirited, unsourced and ignores that Greinke's list also included small markets like Milwaukee, where he was eventually traded. Like so many have reported, Greinke's no-trade list seems designed to either create leverage for an extension in case he was traded to a big market team or block trades to non-competitive teams.

(B) Marchland's whole piece just assumes that the Royals will jump at an opportunity to trade Soria once the Yankees decide they want him. Again, absurd and insulting.

Ugh.
