Bad As Kyle is, Royal fans have seen worse. Remember Matt Suzuki? Dan Reichert? Pitchers so bad that, even with a murders row of Johnny Damon, Carlos Beltran, Jermaine Dye, Mike Sweeney and Joe Randa driving in runs for them, they still couldn’t win. We could do worse than Kyle – and have.

Is Kyle Davies the new Yuniesky or the opposite? Kyle Davies is a perfect example how using Baseball Reference’s WAR or Fangraphs’ WAR can make a HUGE difference and depending on your point view can be suited to make your argument. And by using Kyle’s Fangraphs WAR, which is heavily reliant upon fielder independent stats, it points out a little flaw in this argument; you can’t write article after article detailing how BAD (historically so) the defense has been (the Yuni years) and then ignore Davies’ FIP numbers. Davies is actually a perfect test case to see how accurate the assumptions of FIP are, and/or a good test to see if the Royals defense is really as improved as it seems to be. I’m curious to see how his numbers are at the end of the year, but needless to say I wouldn’t want him on my fantasy team.

Davies is awful, but I don’t think giving him a shot or five reflects poorly on The Process. Yes, the Royals could have gotten better performance from a AAA organizational soldier, but such a pitcher would have had less chance of putting things together and becoming a valuable starter. Davies has stuff. That didn’t guarantee success; but it did mean he could succeed. Over the last few years, what have the Royals had to lose? It’s not like they were going to compete in these seasons anyway. Sometimes when you roll the dice, you get snake eyes. It doesn’t imply the decision to roll them resulted from a flawed process.

I just wanted to point out: I went to the game on Saturday April 2nd. After the game was over, I stopped in at the Royals’ shop at the stadium and bought an Alex Gordon bobblehead that was on sale for half-price. After I purchased this bobblehead, Alex started his hitting streak which continued tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kyle Davies getting this many chances is as insane as Kevin Kouzmanoff (sp) getting as many chances as he’s got.

An addendum; Davies is now pitching for an even better team than the previous couple of years, so can be expected to improve his percentage. In the first Saturday game, the rest of the team covered for his sixth inning meltdown with a studly play at the plate and some timely hitting from normally limp bats. Last year the Royals lose that game. Last year’s bullpen would also have lost that game, Torii Hunter hitting a grand slam instead of being humiliated by Aaron Crow. I would guess that Davies will approach 60% for wins in games he starts this year, accepting his Royals history, then adjusting upward for a better team on the field with him. How’s that for going out on a limb:)? Hope springs eternal.

Just a statement of fact and we know how superstitious baseball folks are.

“And further more, you cannot just assume they have a better than 50% chance of winning when he goes out there in the future.”

We can never assume the future, but Davies seems to be holding to form this year. I have no reason why they win, maybe the rest of the guys just like him and give a little extra more for him than for the 14 million Dollar Man who was mailing it in? Just suggesting that that record may be influencing GMDM, even if subconsciously, and I also think that Yost may be noticing the long term pattern of fifth and sixth inning meltdowns and will adjust his hook accordingly. When the Royals decide to bring one of the kids up, Davies goes to the ‘pen and performs well.

Have to question the Eddie Lopat stat. His baseball reference page says he had a career ERA of 3.21 and averaged over 7 innings per appearance. Not sure how his quality start % could be that low.

That said, point stands. Davies sucks.
