To let both Escobar and Getz bat at the key point of the game was simple rally homicide. Escobar might be a plus defender but Getz is average (Being better than Aviles does not make one a plus defender). You absolutely had to pinch hit for Escobar. You could decide on what to do with Getz based on the outcome of that at bat.

Not good to watch both Gordon and Butler slump at the same time.

heres a thought, once chen comes back keep mazzaro around until the huge call ups for the pitching rotation, and slide davies to the bullpen as a long/mid reliever. its obvious he can throw 3 good innings,, wouldnt that be great to have around on the chance your starters having an off day?

"He's playing instead of Betemit or Aviles & thats why its an issue"

Yes of course Greg & obviously he is taking away a good bat but the reason he is in there is because of his defence & i dont think anybody is arguing that either of the above two are better at defence!

FWIW I think we should keep Betemit at third as an everyday player until he goes into a slump, play Getz at 2B to start & keep him there unless if we go two runs or more down in the game by around the fifth/sixth innings then i would bring Aviles in as a replacement!

He looks like he's 9-for-24 with RISP this year, Christian, which is pretty good...but I'm a little hesitant to call Getz clutch based on 24 plate appearances this season. For 2008-2010, he hit .267 in 155 plate appearances. I'm thinking that's more realistic.

It's pretty simple...Betemit not only is just a better hitter than Getz, but when he gets a hit, it's much more likely to be an extra-base hit, which would score more runs. I like Getz and all, but if he's coming to the plate with the game on the line for my team, I'm looking for alternatives.

Pretty sure the announcers last night mentioned something of Getz batting .400 with runners in scoring position.....that's a pretty good average for a situation where you just need a base hit to tie the game.

I just can't think the Royals are actually going to run something like a .250 winning % on the road -- that'd be well-night catastrophic, and would also be very hard to do.

On the other hand, their home winning % is bound to drop to compensate.

If we're to draw any hope, though, it comes in the fact that that in game 1 vs. both the Yankees and A's series, the opposition was lucky to win the game -- the Yankees did it with seeing eye singles, and the A's did it by having the good fortune to bunch their baserunners/hits together in the same inning and win despite being outplayed.

Still in all, though, the culprit in 3 of their last 4 losses has been the offense tanking. We can now see how reliant the Royals were on their top 5-6 hitters doing all the work early on, because now that Getz, Butler, and Gordon aren't hitting, the Royals aren't scoring. Unfortunately, by the time they do, the starting pitching staff's run of relative competence will probably be at an end.

with respect %, I prefer players who do something as opposed to those who 'look as if the might'. Getz is not playing instead of Treanor or Escobar, he's playing instead of Aviles or Betemit and that's why it's an issue. If you want to argue Treanor or Escobar could be replaced as well then I'll listen to it (but only agree with half of it...), but that doesn't change the fact the Getz is bringing very little to the table.
