With Crow, Hoz, Moose, Duffy, and Gio, this year’s typical plan seems to promote sooner rather than later if the major league incumbent isn’t performing, which is why Cain and Robinson haven’t come up. Sal Perez starting tonight isn’t unexpected given that he is the future. Just a confluence of events accelerated it by a few weeks. There had been suggestions that Perez would have been called up when Treanor was hurt, but I think they wanted to look at Pina and see what they had. Pina was alright, so they probably see him as a possible back-up C, so now it’s Perez’ turn. If he hits in the Treanor-Escobar range he stays, if he hits like Moose we may see other moves.

But why not? Why rush a prospect and apparently deviate from their typical plan? Clark might not be as good of a fill-in as Perez, but who cares for the rest of 2011? As long as Perez is in AAA to start 2012, this is mostly a moot point – but that looks like it’s not going to be the case.

Eric- I think since Kendall is on the 60-day DL, he doesn’t count against the 40-man even though he’s “on it”. I think if you count the players on the 40-man, including Kendall, you will count 41.

maybe I don’t understand the 40 man roster, so I was hoping someone could clear it up. I don’t really mind that we released Davies (in fact I am thrilled and I hated Davies), however I don’t understand why we chose him to release. According to espn, Kendall is still on our 40 man roster and he is not able to play until 2013 because of injury. That combined with the fact that we have 4 catchers that we are trying on the team, Kendall is making 3.7 million, and Kendall is terrible, why wouldn’t we just release Kendall?

Did you see the collision when Treanor got hurt? He not only got concussed from going face first into the ground, but he got a nasty neck snap from the runner’s shoulder. I would be real surprised if he’s cleared to play for awhile yet, then he’ll go to the minors for rehab, then he might be back in September, or might not, but is a free agent after this season and doesn’t figure in the team’s long-term plans. Getz missed half a season last year from concussion. This isn’t a quick turnaround injury.

I think we have a real good idea of what the team will do, suggested by the handling of the bullpen, Duffy, Hoz, Moose, and now Gio. When they bring up someone projected as part of the immediate future, he plays.

nice OP. another interpretation of all this would involve the fuzzy thinking coming from the manager’s chair. With Yost it’s always something other than winning today’s ball game. Without a doubt always drafting 5th or better Royals will at some future unknown year have a winning record. How many more playing careers Ned Yost will destroy in the process of getting there is painful to watch–aviles, betemit, davies pitched injured, maier, b. pena, getz, Tejada pitched injured, etc. etc.

Definitely surprised me – but situations do happen, so it is good that the Royals finally have some talent to fill in. Having the top four organizational catchers getting Major League playing time this year should lead to good off-season decisions. This is one position that I don’t know how to guess which two wins the 2012 roster spots – probably Treanor gone (poor hitting), Pina in AAA and Perez/Pena tandem catching. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they bring in another veteren catcher (left handed hitter) to replace Pena (they seems to like veteren catchers…)

I like the move personally as Abh said we got younger and probably better by subtraction. Treanor was not an all star by any means. Lets see who is ready for 12 and who needs to be resigned and who just need to go.

The bench is a mess. You have one guy who can catch, one guy that can only play 2nd, and Mitch who has versatility. But last week when Melky had to play the OF on a bum ankle that he was resting because Getz can’t play the OF is brutal. If they are going with a 3 man bench, you need a spork.
