Dear Royals,
I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for being interesting. As a direct result of you actually being relevant and competitive, I subsequently paid attention to MLB in general and dominated my fantasy league (with #4 manning 3B, I take back everything I said about you) through the entire season instead of plummeting in the standings after the All-Star break/start of NFL mini-camps.
Your record sucks, but I'll take the high draft pick in a rebuilding year. You made me proud and hopeful.

The outfield assists are fun to watch. But it would be nice to see a little bit quicker outfield as a whole. Watching Melky run out there in CF, and not get to balls that Cain or especially Dyson would get to is a little frustrating. I like the outfield as a whole, especially for their offense this year. But some speed might prevent those runners from being on base instead of having to throw them out.

The better stat that I have been following lately is the doubles machines on this team. And even the HRs. Hosmer, Gordon, Melky, Butler, and Francoeur could all end up with 20hrs. And four of those guys should end up with over 40 doubles. That will start to create more runs very soon, I think. And if the Royals pitchers could prevent a few more runs, this team could be a winner.

The outfield assists have been the best part of watching the Royals this year - loved the 9-3 Frenchy pulled off a few days ago.

One aspect that doesn't seem to get much attention is that some of the assists require Escobar or Getz/Gio to have a perfect relay throw.

Would be interested in seeing a comparison with past Royals' fielding stats - can't imagine many better than this year's team - maybe the Damon/Beltran/Dye team.

If you add in Perez at the plate with his quick release and good instincts and the overall plus defensive play of Hosmer and Escobar, the Royals defense becomes a very serious threat to baserunners all over the diamond.

The benefit I see here is that while offensive numbers may ebb and flow, I think defensive capability is less prone to streaks and more likely to remain consistent from year to year. While our outfielders may not be able to continue offensive productivity at the level of 2011 they should hopefully remain as strong of a defensive unit in the future. Let our rookie team in the infield gain a bit more experience and 2012 should be even more fun to watch.
