Keeping Chen seems like a bigger priority to me than to you. He was our best starter last year and the only guy ready to be a #3 in our rotation. Obviously #1 and #2 starter spots have to be priority for the Royals to make a leap to consistently good, but why hold Chen's prior years of performance against him when has clearly learned to be a decent MLB pitcher?

Jim, I really have never understood your infatuation with Getz. I am not on the Giavotella bandwagon or the Getz bandwagon, and I've been advocating that they sign Kelly Johnson to a 1-year deal with Giavotella doing some utility work.

Really, though. What do you find so special about Getz other than "Lee Judge likes him"?

I think Chen gets tendered to set up the supplemental pick, Pena should stay, as his defense has improved and he's a switch hitter, and Getz simply outperformed Giavotella, who just got operated on, so will also get an offer.

As for the "Grit" snark, for our readers, the beloved Johnny Giavotella actually had a lot of Grit points in the System. And that with all his errors, strikeouts, and oopsies with the glove. Just the nature of a system that looks at more than taking walks when batting ahead of Mike Aviles.

I was looking at the Darvish situation a bit and of course teams like the Yankees are interested in him, and Baltimore and Toronto. It will be interesting if he decides to post because almost every story I read mentioned that expectations are that teams will bid/pay less for Darvish than Matsuzaka because of the disappointments with Dice-K; but at the same time almost everything I have read expresses a general belief that Darvish is a better pitcher than Dice-K and that his arm isn't yet as old as Matsuzaka's was when he posted. So will the bidding really be noticeably lower for Darvish than Matsuzaka? And it isn't as though the Yankees need to be moderate in their bidding. If they really want him, they could easily afford to out-bid everyone, right? Especially if Sabathia opts out and the Yanks decide to not try to re-sign him.

All the Royals need to do is trade for either Gavin Floyd or John Danks. I prefer Danks as he is younger and has more upside. The Sox love trade with us, and usually don't rake us as some other teams (A's) always seem to always do. Heck trade for both and our starting rotation is set for the next 3 years until the kids are really ready and push us to make a move on our terms? Seams to easy, maybe I should of been a GM......

ALOT of payroll flexibility over the next couple of years. Time to sign Gordon for about 4 years 30 mil. I know it won't happen, but signing Hosmer for 10 years 100 mil makes since to me. Going after Yu Darvish makes alot of sense on paper, but I don't think it happens. I think it will be 50 mil posting, plus about 60 mil spread out of 5 years, which is what Dice-K got. That kind of money wouldn't put the Royals out of business, but it would be stretching them a little. I would like to see a move for a Shields/Gio esque pitcher, but I don't want to see Myers involved. If Myers isn't involved then it doesn't happen though, probably.

With so little projected in payroll I assume we will see lots of money put into the draft and the international market. But what are the prospects of a serious bid for Yu Darvish? I know it has been bandied about, but is it realistic? How is the bid payment structured, i.e. one lump sum or several years, as is the structure negotiable with the Japanese team? What might a winning bid for Darvish look like; what about a contract for him? I assume we can use Matsuzaka as a reference point even though Dice-K has disappointed these past couple seasons. It is a lot of money to invest in one pitcher -- what did the Red Sox pay for Matsuzaka, $110 million over five years or something? -- more or less equivalent to paying for a top free agent pitcher. I think the Royals can afford this, but is it realistic to think they might pursue him? Also, and alternatively, is there any chance the Royals get in on Cole Hamels if he leaves Philly?

Are the Type-B compensation picks sandwich only? Or does the signing team forfeit a pick? Mark Grudzielanek found out way back when there's not as many takers if you cost $$$ and a draft pick. My guess would be Chen would accept the arbitration offer, which I would welcome as a fan. They might as well keep Pena around thru spring training at least -- even thru arbitration he won't cost much, and Pina or Perez could always hurt themselves running for cover during a rainstorm, and then it would be nice to have Pena around for a few months.
