This talk of CJ Wilson, Oswalt, Burhle is rediculous. 1st, the latter 2 are not spring chickens and are two of the top three SP's on the market. At this stage of their careers they will want nothing to do with the Royals. They want to go where they have a chance of winning it all. CJ Wilson will probably go to the highest bidder, but frankly not enough there for a team like the Royals to spend that much on him. I rather keep the money than spend it on a guy like these, because that money has to come from some where. Where? Possibly from our draft budget, that would be catastrophic! The only way to sustain competitiveness and viability is to continue to spend heavy on scouting/drafting/development, even once it starts paying off in a competitor at the ML level.
I want to win too, but I am not willing to give up long term success for a 85 win season.
Be happy with what we did. Melkey had a great season for us and has now paid us back by turning into a SP with enough upside that he will solidify out rotation and maybe has a good enough year that we can flip him at deadline or recover a pick when he leaves as a FA.

Now we will find out if Dayton believes we are one last move away from winning the division in 2012. He can guarantee that we are competitive to do so, and without wasting any top prospects, or even the depth of the farm system, by signing Roy Oswalt for 2 or 3 years of cold hard cash. We have a unique very low payroll for just that period of time, before we need to start extending our young stars. Roy is our short term ace until Monty or Lamb steps up and has time to grow into that role, takes the pressure off them and Hoch to fill that spot before they are ready, and electrifies the organization and fans by giving us a legitimate chance to compete in the AL Central in 2012 and 2013. Dayton does this without depleting our farm system one bit, and especially not losing Wil Myers or other top prospects who can help keep the dynasty going for many years.

You know I agree this Melky hate is unwarranted, I like the trade because we need starting pitching but Melky had 200 hits which no royal has had for a decade that in of itself is a good accomplishment and so I also wish Melky the best of luck and hope he does well for the giants this season !!!!

Just want to say thanks to Melky for a fantastic 2011 season. 200 hits! For that people are throwing around phrases like the Royals 'got rid of' or 'unloaded' Melky. Wow! Talk about a lack of appreciation. Now I'm not saying its a bad trade or anything like that. In fact, it's a trade that makes perfect sense. But I think Melky deserves more than a 'don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.' Not sure why people don't think he can repeat his performance in a contract year. Good luck to Melky!

"Thoughts?"

Hoch is the only one of the four capable of consistently hitting the strike zone, so that is worrisome, and I would prefer promoting Montgomery with Odorizzi on the horizon at Omaha rather than mortgaging the farm for Wilson. I'm still good with the team growing internally into a dynasty rather than chasing instant gratification. Sanchez will probably be gone in '13, so I'ld prefer developing one of our own prospects rather than buying another team's.

So now the Royals are a #1 away from a legit rotation:

Paulino at #2 (the peripherals are there)
Sanchez at #3 (that's not a stretch)
Hochevar at #4
Duffy at #5 (which could be shooting low)

I'm all for the Royals making a move for CJ Wilson. Plug him in at the top and that rotation has the potential to be strong.

Thoughts?

I don't see how this trade can go badly for the Royals. They traded one year of Melky Cabrera for something of possible value. Cabrera could easily hit .300 again, or .230. This way, they were able to sell high. If Sanchez pitches like a legitimate #4 starter for two seasons, the Royals win. If he pitches better, the Royals win big.

I like the trade. The Royals seem to have had good luck lately getting guys to play up to their potential (Frenchy, Melky, Gordon, Paulino to name just a few). If they can work a little magic with Sanchez we should have a reliable starter.

I just don't understand all the negative vibes toward Melky though. He had a bounceback season similar to the others yet no one seems to believe he can repeat. I guess that is the big gamble Sabean decided is worth taking.

Hopefully Cain can live up to everyone's expectations.

One word of caution: Sanchez won't be racking up Ks against opposing pitchers in the American League, so probably reasonable to expect his K/9 to drop by one or two and his WHIP to rise. Important things will be his health, his BB/9, and getting his innings per start up.

When DM extended Frenchy I was a bit upset because I wanted a Gordon-Cain-Melky outfield in 2012. But he recognized something that I just didn't: Melky, even as a defensively challenged center fielder, has trade value because he didn't embarrass himself in center field last season while also hitting decently well. Kudos to DM for once again proving that I am a terrible baseball analyst. I love this trade. Sanchez might not be a top of the rotation guy, and he might not recover his previous value, but it is a bold move to get a player who could potentially be our best starter over the course of the season.
