You’re conveniently leaving out the roster bonus and incentives. Point stands if it’s 9 million (which it isn’t). Other teams offering more means nothing to the discussion of whether it’s money well spent.

Greg, Chen will make 4.5 mil in both ’12 and ’13 and (if you take his word for it, which I do) he turned down more money from several other teams. Learn the facts bro. If you need to exaggerate to make your point, maybe you don’t have one.

Treanor has already singed as the backup catcher for the Dodgers next year. I am guessing that keeps him closer to Misty May practicing on the beach. I think Brayan gets the backup job if he does well in spring training and hits it off well with our new catching coach, if not we either call up Manny or sign a veteran backup.

Matt Treanor is possible as back-up and mentor, Pena is a switch-hitter and his defense improved last year. Looks like a coin-flip, as I like both for the role, Treanor the better defender, Pena the better hitter.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a veteran catcher signed (Clark, Treanor does seem ideal) prior to the season & Brayan Pena given his walking papers. Pina gets another year in AAA and is the primary backup for Mission 2013.

Seems like with a four man bench, Teahan could replace Mitch, assuming Dyson is kept to backup CF and pinch run. Teahan would be about the same hitter as Mitch, but can sub at more positions than Mitch (four corners with the key being 3B).

Teahen has some appeal as a ‘four corner man’ IF the Royals decide to go with a four man bench and IF he comes at the major league minimum.

Low priced is the key I guess. I just don’t see the need for spending money when you have cheap servicable options. Moore cries poor on big ticket needs and then signs minor pieces for over market value. It adds up. 2 mil for Yuni, 6 mil for Chen, 1.5 mil for backup catcher, 4 mil for SURPLUS relief pitching. But there’s no WAY we can afford one year of Oswalt (or whoever).

If we’re going to play Sal as much as humanly possible (which I see no evidence we won’t) then a bat with pop in your backup is a pretty desirable trait. With regular ABs it seems Pena has that. In addition, Pena has made some memorable misplays, but overall he seems servicable to me given his offensive ability.
