bunting and hit and run….is this the 1970′s? First of all, Butler can hit and run, he takes the ball the other way naturally, and if I don’t see a Royal bunt all year before the 9th inning I will be a happy man. The Royals scored more runs last season because they hit a ton of doubles and not because Francoeur stole 20 bases.

A guy ‘looks’ like a #2 hitter? a guy who hit .250 ‘looks’ like a #2 hitter? Why don’t we just put Chris Getz in the 2 spot, or Escobar… How many wins did all those stolen bases get us last year? Tell me, how many how many runs are directly attributable to stealing a base for the 2011 Royals. A batter’s body type has nothing to do with anything.

You are right about 1 thing, Giavotella won’t clog up the bases, because he never gets on them, unless Max Scherzer is pitching.

But Giavotella looks like a #2 hitter and Butler looks like a #4 or #5 hitter. Butler will just clog the bases. Plus Butler can’t bunt and hit and run.

So, the Royals should bat Giavotella 2nd because he can go 1st to 3rd; even though he hit .247/.273/.376 last season? Gio would be jealous of Yuni’s line .252/.271/.381….Would you be OK with Yuni batting 2nd? I think not. If Gio hits well and they move him to 2nd later in the year, that’s fine, but he should not be hitting in the top 2/3 of the lineup until he proves in belongs in the big leagues. Why not bat Butler bat 2nd? Speed is overrated until a team needs a run late in the game.

Butler is too slow to hit 2nd? He only hits 2nd one time per game. Wouldn’t it be smarter to get the 2 players with the highest OBP (Gordon and Butler) the most at bats? Butler only had 16 GIDP’s in 2011, and if Hosmer is going to hit for the power we all expect then going 1st to 3rd won’t be a problem.

A 10-win bump is necessary for a 500 season, and that is a generous prediction, though not unreasonably optimistic. It is difficult to know what to expect from the rotation, but it is almost a certainty that they will be better than last year’s rotation which allowed the third most runs in the AL, struck out the fifth fewest batters and walked the most. Most do not predict a massive improvement from the rotation, but any steps forward (combined with a comparable offensive performance) should be good for a few more wins. I don’t know….should be kind of an interesting season, sort of like how Nick Scott described last season, maybe not a winning team, but entertaining and interesting to watch.

Don’t think anyone has suggested 20 games, although it is possible.

“Any improvements will come from the young bats and a solid bullpen.”

And a better defense and better rotation. The team is upgraded over last year’s opening day roster. More talent and more experience seems a way to put together a better team.

Most rotations do. Royals can live with that.

He has good K9s and fips, which I’ve been told is most important. We’ll have to see, he could turn into Davies, he could put up some numbers and rack up some wins. I think he’s an improvement over Davies.

It definitely looks cheap, I’ll give you that. I dont see that as a 20 game swing in the record. My god are you optomistic. No one on this roster has sniffed .500 record with the Royals. Before Paulino gets you excited about his change of scenery last year, remember he was basically the NL’s version of Kyle Davies. Any improvements will come from the young bats and a solid bullpen. This rotation will give at least one start a week where the game is over before the 3rd inning.

Have seen no reason to assume that this year’s pitching will be the same level as last. We began last season with Hoch, Francis, Davies, Chen, and SOS/Maz. This year starts with Hoch, Sanchez, Paulino, Chen, and Duffy. Looks a clear enough upgrade and cheap enough with no five year contracts.
