In Sanchez you are getting a solid citizen with a proven record, he will dominate any left hander you throw against him (i.e. Prince Fielder, ooh at his stats against him) He will walk people, but more times than not he will strand those runners. He is also coming to a team that will score more than 2 runs a game, imagine how many games he would have won in SF if they scored for him ( lost 2 games where he only gave up 1 hit ).

We may have a different perspective on this, Zack. To me, the bases on balls is both annoying and dull. A pitcher who can’t throw the ball over the plate does not get my attention. My mind wanders. By my definition, that is boring. If it becomes too annoying, my interest is not piqued, my interest just fades away and I’m on to other things.

Extrapolating from Paulino’s 20 starts and 2.6 fWAR to 30 starts and 3.9 fWAR, he would have been a #1 starter, but not an ace. As was, he and and Jeff Francis were #2s.

Thomas, you are making the point that the author of the article is intending. By Sanchez annoying you, he is by definition not boring. He is frustrating and has your attention…which is just the opposite of monotony.

I disagree. To me, there is nothing more boring than a pitcher who walks a lot of guys and throws a lot of pitches. When I’m watching or listening to a game, I like to see a pitcher who works fast, changes speed, and changes location — but throws the ball over the plate more often than not. I imagine the players in the field prefer that as well.

If Sanchez K rate is 9.51 or 8.82 per 9 that is better than anyone on our staff that is a starter by almost 4/9. I love a guy who can get the K when you need it. Hoch hopefully has finally learned to not go for the K and get the GBO. that was getting him in trouble at the start of last year. I don’t believe Sanchez by any means is a true #1 but maybe someone will have a breakout year on the mound and prove he is a #1 kind of the was Gordon did last year. If we have lightning strike again I hope it’s either Crow or Monty. Both have electric stuff.

Chalky – what I did (hopefully correctly) was eliminate all plate appearances against pitchers. I am not sure 8.82 is dead on, but it’s close.

I’ld keep Dyson on a three man bench, being a great defender as well as pinch runner. We’ll see, maybe ST will clarify things a little.

This is flawed, because you didn’t take out the non-strikeout outs that pitchers batting have made.)

The reason I don’t think the Royals need an 8-man pen is due to the ease at which you can send down an overworked arm and bring up a hot hand. They should plan on rotating guys throughout the year – giving them the opportunity to keep a four-man bench with Dyson for late inning pinch running.
