Brayan is loved in the clubhouse. He has said he will play for the Royals for the league minimum. He is exactly the guy to have at backup catcher, especially if Royals plan to give Perez as many games as he can handle. If Perez is injured, Pina will be up in a day. If something dramatically bad happens Ramirez has some experience. Angst over Pena is much ado over nothing.

This may sound crazy but I think if Mair was a FA there would be a few suitors looking for someone like him because all in all he really isn’t a bad player and does a lot of things right and his skills would land him somewhere else, especially in the NL I think.

Because of options, Brayan will be the backup on the ML roster. However, if Perez is injured for more than a few games, I’ll thinking Manny would slide into Perez’s everyday role. In other words, Manny is probably the real #2 guy, but will be catching regularly in AAA.

Signing a backup catcher right now is a WASTE OF DOLLARS. We are fine. I like Pina’s defense better than Pena playing everyday in a DL scenario.

For the next several years, whenever I think about the Royals #2 catcher, I’ll say to myself, “It’s a good thing we didn’t draft Yasmani Grandal in 2010. Dodged a bullet there, guys!” And then I’ll cry a single tear for the 2-headed monster of a backstop that might’ve been.

Yeah, he’s ancient, but in a pinch…. surely he’s better than pena?

Being a catcher always brings a risk of injury, especially with collisions at home plate. Maybe one can assume that the number of collisions will decline given the guns we have in the OF–fewer teams will test us. Then again, maybe the likelihood for collisions increases because our OF is more accurate. Don’t know. Just putting it out there. My point is that Perez is one collision away from the DL. So, I like having Pena back there. Don’t like him starting everyday, but as a (very) short term answer, we could do much worse.
