Ted – $16 million per year should in theory be about 1/5th of what I think the Royals’ payroll will be in the 2014-2016 range. Still a big chunk, but better than 1/3 and, I don’t think, too out of the ordinary.

Teddy P – July 12th, right after Yuni hits his third grand slam and sixth home run of the year. Sure, his on-base percentage will be .281 at the time, but he will be doing things those of us not in the dirt don’t understand and cannot see.

Speaking of extensions….when is Betancourts extension coming? I am being a realist and Dayton Moore has shown a real lust for the guy. Clark or Craig, please weigh in on the odds of a Yuni extension.

Alex- I don’t think 8/$80 is enough to get Boras/Hosmer interested enough to give up a couple of controlled years. I think Rany is off target on that one.
Dan- That’s the point of a ‘knock your socks off early deal’: to get Boras to consider changing his usual mode of operation. And yes, Texas made out pretty good, but I bet you can name three or four other similar deals where the team receiving prospects did not make out near as well.

Other than Soria’s contract signed several years ago, have you noticed Dayton seems focused on the positional players. Why wouldn’t they talk a long term deal with Hochevar? Two thoughts – Boras is the agent and maybe there is a sense that pitchers are too much of a gamble for deals longer than a few years.

As for Hosmer, Boras won’t let him sign anything longer than his controlled years. Hosmer will go the same way that Mark Texeria did with the Rangers. Didn’t Texas get quite a bit of talent in that deal???

And THIS is why baseball is an afterthought only to get my attention after College BB is over and before the NFL starts up. It’s sad that the game is to this point where the Royals have to risk not being competitive for the next decade to keep ONE super star player…good luck MLB…haven’t been to a game in 10 years, won’t for a lot longer.

I think something more like 10/120 million could get it done…that’s a ton of money to guarantee someone who has played 3/4 of a season in the big leagues, and I think it would draw serious consideration from Hos/Boras.

Keep in mind, signing Hosmer to a ten year deal means the tenth year of that contract will be his age 32 season. I seriously doubt that barring some devastating injury that Hosmer will be in serious decline at that point.
Assuming that this portion of The Process will work, the Royals would likely find themselves drafting in the latter third of the first round instead of the first third and hence, are more likely to not get impact prospects with the regularity they have thus far.
At some point you have to pick a couple of players you are going to pay and build around – not for five years but for eight to ten
