as a fellow royals fan also banished to twinsville, it’s nice to be able to rip on them a little too. MN fans have selective amnesia about the state of their team from 1992-2000.

I cannot remember who said it, or the exact wording, but the sentiment was something like “a true perfect game would be 27 outs on 27 pitches”. That said, all the research done on defense independent pitching makes it pretty clear that striking guys out is better over the long term than letting them put the ball in play.

Anyway, the point is, as a Royals fan living in MN, it is nice to see the home town fans feeling wriggle in discomfort for a while. Schadenfreude people, schadenfreude.

I heard the Royals announcers bring up a point about pitching to contact, basically saying a flyball pitcher is an advantage over a strikeout pitcher because there are usually less pitches thrown and your starters can go deeper into games. Makes sense. They also pointed out that way back when, starters would routinely go 200+ innings a season with less than 100 K’s because they would pitch to contact and get outs, sometimes only needing 5-6 pitches per inning.

Seems like more pitchers are getting no-hitters in the post-PED era – still getting 27 outs is an achievement any way you look at it.

In comparing Humber and Weaver, they had some similar stats. Both got 9 strikeouts, 5 ground ball outs and 13/14 fly ball outs. (Weaver had to get 28 outs).

Most pitchers stress ‘keeping the ball low’ – but this seems like fly balls are better for pitchers.

Cheer up, Royals fans, here in MN the fans are nearly in open revolt after the team was shutout in consecutive contests, including Weaver’s no hitter and a mere three-hit effort the night before. And just last night I read that average fan attendance here is down 5,000 from last season. Ouch.

How could Moore come over from the Braves organization and run out a complete turd of a rotation year after year. You’d think during those 14 straight division titles they won with their starting pitching it’d of dawned on him at some point.
