While the three recent shutouts have been against weak teams - a shutout is still a feat - especially for this group of starters. Having 6 shutouts (in 54 games) on the year is second in the majors to the LA Angles with 7. Two of the shutouts have been against the White Sox and Yankees - they aren't bad.

3-0 Oakland Duffy
5-0 WhiteSox Hoch
6-0 Yankees Paulino

Broxton hardly came from the scrap heap. The guy is a two time National League All Star, is currently 20th on the career active saves list and is one of the highest paid players on the team.

Chen and Paulino are certainly reclamation projects. Broxton? Not so much.

Ok I just noticed this, almost every pitcher on this staff that GMDM has traded for sucks. Sanchez, Mazzaro, SOS, Will Smith dont really strke fear into anyone. But the scrap heap that has been where GMDM has done a pretty darn good job. Chen, Paulino, Broxton at least have value on this team. So maybe I should stop looking for trades to make and look for players that other teams have recently released in order to find our next great pitcher ha ha.

I think what we have to expect in KC is GMDM to continue to bring in project pitchers, ie Chen, Paulino, Sanchez, Broxton. So far his track record has been pretty decent but until some of our minor league guys make an impact it just wont be enough.

As far as the Royals "racking up the shut-outs" (see post way up above) let us not forget that the Royals three recent shut-outs have all come against teams at least as offensively challenged than they are.

The Royals are on pace to score 645 runs this season. If that holds up that total will be amongst the worst in franchise history. By the way, in case you are wondering, the Royals have been LOSING ground on their runs scored per game pace the past month, not gaining on it.

The A's are on a pace to score 544 (!!!) runs this season and the Twins are right there with Royals, on a pace to score 648 this season.

Needless to say (maybe it isn't), these three teams are 12th, 13th, & 14th in the AL in runs scored. I don't consider it any major accomplishment to shut out either the Twins or the A's, particularly the A's, and that's who two of them are against.

If the Royals start dealing shutouts at the Rangers and Red Sox, then I'll sit up and start taking notice.

I hate watching pitchers hit. This year to date they are hitting .124/.158/.153. There has never been a pitcher who has kept his starting job because of his bat. Even Micah Owings lost his starting job when his pitching sucked. If it is not a factor at all, and not expected of them, why have them do it?

As for the "strategy", it just gives guys like Yost more of a chance to to feel like they are doing something. The double switch is hardly rocket science, a trained monkey could do it. I want the DH everywhere.

Kudos to Tim for putting Hochevar at #5 where he belongs. I think Hochevar should be COMPETING for the #5 spot next spring. The people that put him at #1 or #2 are delusional at best, and the idea that he could be dealt for a good player or top draft pick is ludicrous.

Yost lifting Chen last night is beautiful example of the inconsistencies of Ned Yost and how he talks out of both sides of his mouth.

On the one hand, we have a manager that insists upon the insane notion of having a 13 man pitching staff and then handing the ball to the bullpen more than any other manager in the game (as is currently the case). Additionally, to do this "successfully", the Royals are playing "pitcher Musical Chairs" with the Omaha Stormchasers in the interest of finding and "keeping fresh arms around". (ROTFLMFAO)

So, when confronted with a golden opportunity to stem that tide, what does our "manager" do? He flies in the face of his own public statements about his woefully overworked pen and jerks his starter in a situation where nobody would have batted an eye had he left him in! A situation where logic would and did dictate leaving him in the game!

I just happened to catch this portion of the game on the radio (unusual for me, any more) and I was pleased that Denny Mathews was as disgusted by this as I was (although he was much more subtle in his critique). Physioc is who actually brought it up as Denny wasn't doing the play-by-play that inning and he asked him to weigh-in the topic.

Predictably, the Kansas City Star didn't even so much as mention the fact that Chen came out of the game so late, and, after only throwing 88 pitches--still working on a shut-out.

One day, it will perhaps be our good fortune to have somebody competent at the helm again. Alas, it's been a VERY long time. Does Ned remind anybody else besides me of Ronald Reagan when you listen to him?
