Bloomy has a career OPS of .647. He’s never exceeded .663, and that was last year. He’d have had the worst OPS last year of anyone on the team with 150 PA’s, except Betancourt was having a horrible year (sidenote – Yuni’s BABIP in 2009 was .256, so maybe he was experiencing a little bit of bad luck last year as opposed to being a complete turd).

So I’m not a Bloomy hater (I’ll keep him as a utility player) but he’s not a prospect who is going to breakout soon. He’s an 8 year veteran who’s as good as he’s going to get, and he’s not a part ofthe future.

CL-Thats actualy a very good point you make about Ankiel & the DL

I dont know what youve got against Bloomquist though? His low batting average is almost solely down to having limited at-bats,just look at Maier now that he is starting to have a few games strung together,he was struggling figuratively when having sporadic appearances but know look at the difference

It doesnt necessarily take power to get vital RBI’s,look back to last year & the legendary ninth innings comeback against Cleveland & who got the final say in the game?

Yes Wee Willie Bloomquist driving home the winning run & leaping into the arms of Rusty Kuntz to celebrate it,i’d have faith in Willie igniting an innings any day!

In defense of Hillman’s comment (and I’m not one to defend Hillman in general) Callaspo is not a good baserunner. But I don’t think that situation called for an exceptional baserunner, especially since the pinch runner you’re choosing is arguably your best bat off the bench (given your other options are Ankiel and Pena).

Ankiel has sat the bench since being pulled for a strained quad on Saturday, so he’s nearly 1/3 of the way through a 15 day DL stint. So why not put him on the DL and call up Kila? Bloomquist can be the utility OF. Getz can come up and take the roster spot from one of the sh!tty relievers and we’ll have plenty of infielders at that point.

CL I actually heard Hillman asked this question on post game and he answered it very directly and I thought threw Callaspo under the bus, he basically said he didn’t Callaspo could score on a ball in the gap he doesn’t have the skill- it was a reall odd comment, I don’t know if he was saying Callaspo doesn’t hustle or is slow but it really came out harsh

Question about today’s (Wednesdays) game:

Bottom of 8. Down 1. 2 outs. Callaspo singles to 1st. Hillman puts in Gordon to pinch run. I thought that was a mistake because Kendall’s coming to the plate and I thought the chances he would hit a ball hard enough for Gordon to score from first were minimal. So why waste the only pinch hitter you’ve got (besides Pena) when you know that at some point in the very near future Willie funking Bloomquist was going to be up and maybe it’d be a good idea to pinch hit for that .180, no power hitter?

Grienke starts are more important than other starts- we have to win those, because he’s the best pitcher in the league and has 0 wins. Each lead he watches gets blown moves him 1 step closer to the door. If you were him would you want to stay here? Plus I worry he becomes disinterested in this team and his starts begin to be less stellar.
What do you think about the suggestion on maximizing Soria in the Raney feedback (I am Blayne btw- i was logged into my sons account for some reason- I wrote a similar piece for Upon Further Review) for me it’s a good and realistic compromise.

Hillman has bad arms in pen that’s the #1 problem but he’s also using them poorly which contributes to the meltdowns. He rides the hot hand then overextends these AAAA guys past their skill level gets burned and then it’s doghouse time (anyone seen Parrish lately?- ah dont make Sabrtrey look bad-banishment) and on to someone else. This week alone we’ve seen Farnsworth, Rupe, Hughes, Tejeda and Chen in late inning high leverage situations- that’s insane no team does that-

These guys are bad to begin with and now also on such a short chain they pitch with extra pressure. Give them roles and stick with them for at least a week or 2 before changing

or Plan B call up better younger arms- the best old guy hasn’t even been called up -Herges- GMDM’s comments in paper were not reassuring as his blinders are fully on still

You’re nice enough not to snipe at Rany by name, but he’s not missing your point — I think you’re talking past each other. Yes, it would be nice if Soria came in to pitch, bases loaded, 7th inning; we all agree. All Rany’s saying — and this is a rare case of me already noticing the truth of his point well before he wrote about it, where usually he gets there and I read him and go “Right!” — is that NO MANAGER IN BASEBALL would bring Soria in there. And that Hillman has been, since last July, MORE aggressive in using Soria in non-Eckersley (9th-inning-save) roles than any other major league manager.

Of all the reasons to resent Hillman, it’s just silly to pick “He’s the best user of his closer in the majors, but by too small a margin”.

a manager that has a clue thinks his way out of this situation, even if u have to bring in starter. is this the sort of thing that erodes managerial respect, if there were any to erode?

Soria doesnt want to pitch anything other than the ninth,period!

It was a begging job from Hillman to get him to pitch in an eighth innings scenario,the Mexicutioner is caking himself about his arm!

I wouldnt have used Tejada in that pressure situation but to be fair to Hillman he had been sharp & impressive in his most recent outings!

Give Lerew a shot,what there to lose,surely experience counts for something?
