Chuck – I think you’re contradicting yourself in your comment. The info you point out shows that the Royals HAVEN’T had the same number of high level draft picks as other teams. By this logic, the Jays should have the top system in the game.

The Royals have built their system without the benefit of a large quantity of high draft choices.

Not at all. I was showing fb that we havent had nearly as many 1st round picks as every other team. Why? Because we have been so bad, we havent had any players other teams wanted to sign as free agents. He says it was something that was so easy, his grandma could do it.

If you draft near the top every year, are you supposed to have a good farm system, or a bad one? They get zero credit from me for doing what my grandma could do.

Regarding our future position on this list, I actually hope that we’re in the top 3 for only the next year or two. After that, I’d hope we’re towards the bottom of the Top 10 because we’re able to trade away some prospects to fill holes on the big league club because we’re finally contending.

fb0252, that is just funny the way you put it. Having the top draft really doesn’t matter that much. You have to go deep (in the draft) or go home. Aaron put it pretty well. Where did Myers, Montgomery, and Lamb come from? Oh yeah, later rounds. the Rays haven’t finished towards the bottom for at least the last 3 years, and they have 10 picks before the Royals get their 2nd pick. When you lose talent to FA (which the Royals haven’t had in some time) you get compensation picks. Those are the key to success.

The Royals will always have a lower payroll than most teams. They have to keep the pipeline full of talent, so when they trade away a piece they have a few to fill in with.

This isn’t like the NFL or NBA draft. You need to hit on guys outside the first round and you have to aquire talent and you have to get latin america guys and you need to then develop them into major leaguers.

The front office deserves nearly all the credit for this. Some of it is luck, some of it is being able to have high draft picks, but they’ve don an excellent job of identifying, signing and developing talent. something that’s not as easy as people think.
