I like Jason’s idea of Kendall finishing rehab in Omaha, and working with young pitchers there. Move up when he is physically 100%. Not when his level of grit has reached 100%. I am not opposed to Kendall being on the roster, it’s when Yost channels his predecessor and gives Kendall ABs that should go to young guys the way Hillman gave ABs to Ross Gload instead of others, especially Kila. If Royals knew more about Kila’s batting skills, the future would be simplier.

Sends a shiver of real fear and doubt down your spine that Yost and Dayton are going to be able to ruin one of the best collection of players of all time, they will choose “great make up” Kyle Davies over untested Mike Montgomery, the “gritty Melky” over Cain. Is way, way, beyond incompetence if Kendall sees even one minute behind the plate ahead of Brayan this year. One of the few slivers on the field for this year is that Dayton and Yost will intelligently sort through Brayan, Getz, Aviles, etc., and make the right choices on these guys who might be part of the future. Dayton promised he would not block younger players. Wake up Dayton!

If Kendall’s gift to the Royals is handling a staff then wouldn’t it be in KC’s best interest to have him rehab in Omaha to start the season, and catch some of the young arms while he’s there. He could then be brought up after 30 days and rejoin the club. That would give Pena a starting nod and a solid month in the limelight.

With neither Kendall or Pena being a piece for the future this would in the least present an opportunity for Brayan and utilize Jason’s value as a coach on the field.

Not really trying to run anyone down, instead wondering if “handling pitchers” or even overall usefulness of a particular catcher is quantifiable. Some variation of ERA would be a good starting point, percentage of passed balls and wild pitches another, percentage of base runners thrown out, all could be factors in handling pitchers; preventing stolen bases and passed balls allowing a pitcher to trust his stuff a little more and get into a better groove. Anything that contributes to a Young Gun’s confidence on the mound would be a positive for handling pitchers.

I guess there’s always a chance that allegations surface that Kendall sent inappropriate text messages to organization employees while with the Brewers, and that this whole situation resolves itself.

Thanks, Jeff E. I was thinking that both backups had better numbers than Kendall and Pena is a better hitter. May’s sample size may be a little small, but the fact that both May and Pena posted better numbers than the veteran suggests that Kendall may not be handling the pitchers better. Pena starting and May as backup seems supported by history.
