to grant--whatever worth--i have better things to do. i comment because i enjoy baseball, and this is absolutely the best site--whatever my opinion is worth.

I am other than a statistician obviously. My observation on Royals pitching staff is general, and other factors besides bare stats are taken into my account: timing of removing the starter, intuitiveness regards removing starter before implosion instead of after, use of starters in terms of injury prevention and performance over the long haul--e.g. with multiple high pitch innings do you remove at that point or persevere, and which of those will affect the subsequent start, conditioning as it relates to performance and injury prevention, etc. etc. Stats are valuable and would uncover some of this. Some of it is based on experience in athletics. You may poo poo if u want. Whether the Royals management is deficient in these various aspects or very good, I don't known because i follow less closely than many. I do see merely from the box scores that stats would show Yost likely the least intuitive manager in baseball and maybe in history in terms of putting in the correct reliever in a situation or a night, timely removing starters, etc. Could be wrong, but, that's rare :)

fb is a pessimistic person who only wants to contradict what this site says, regardless of the fact that he comes and reads it everyday.
fb - I could've sworn you've been saying that managerial incompetence has been causing the Royals to get poor production from their starters, i.e. noodle arms, lack of conditioning, too many pitches, etc. Now they have a good starting rotation game after game? Not sure which way you're going on this. I would point out that the fact that the starters have lower miles on them than anyone not on Baltimore may not support the "Gil Meche" dead arm theory. Can you elaborate on whether our starters are good or are crap. Please support your idea with verifiable and factual sources so I can research. Thanks!

Yeah, fb0252, I really have no idea where you are coming from here. The only thing I would amend in Clark's response is that you cannot define "good starting pitching" any way you want; you can define it in many ways, I suppose, but you can not, I think, define it in such a way as to encompass the KC Royals's 2011 rotation. ERA+ isn't the best stat available, but it is useful, and here it is instructive: only one KC starter has an ERA+ north of 100 (Paulino, sitting at 101) and only Bruce Chen is in the 90s (96). After that you have Francis (82), Hochevar (81) and Duffy (72). So we have one league average starter, another who is just slightly worse than league average, and three who are 20-30% worse than league average. Not good.

Royals' starters have thrown the second fewest innings in the AL (only Oriole starters have thrown less), with an ERA nearly a full run over league average. They are 13th in strikeouts, but only three rotations have walked more than KC starters and only one rotation has allowed more hits. You can define 'good starting pitching' anyway you want, but Royals' starters, for the season, have pitched fewer innings and allowed more baserunners which leads to more stress on the bullpen.

Good point on Adcock, but they have basically wasted a year of his development. If they think he is a future starter they should have made a deal with the pirates so they could send him down.
