Rick, good points. Lee uses the system as a framework for looking at a game. A sac bunt may be over rated by Coach Polk, but the last few weeks we've seen a Royal do a few, then a play or two later the runner scores. The bunt itself may not be worth two points, but looking at the bunt and its results is worth a lot to the reader as far as insight into the games within the game. What the actual numbers from the system, which I don't pay much attention to, accomplish is give some idea of non-traditional value of a player beyond BA, HR, RBI, E, W or L, and ERA. The system being a few years old, it could be said that Coach Polk anticipated sabermetrics and the fine slicing of raw data into more meaningful information. Think of it as the Old Testament of baseball bean counting:)

not a big fan of the judge scoring system, it does score heavy on defensive side, which is half the game, but maybe not enough for some of the offensive side...but DO appreciate the articles and the inside stories...they do bring a different look to the games

"I just think the scoring system is complete garbage."

There are quibbles to be made, but the advantage to the system is that it recognizes things that the so-called "advanced metrics" don't, such as the exceptional defensive play or the pitch in the dirt blocked with a runner on 3rd.

"Sacrifice bunts count as 2 points but a single counts as 1? You reward a player twice as many points for making an out as getting a hit?"

Been discussed and likely gets changed over the winter. I've suggested .5 points for a sac bunt or fly. You'll b e welcome to offer your input when the time comes.

"Watching a 3rd strike is penalized more than a swinging strike out for starters."

That one makes sense. With two strikes the batter should protect the plate and walking back to the dug out with bat in hand does no good.

"(This stat and the statistic for double plays are the 2 main reasons Getz is so high)."

Those and walks, steals, runs scored, advancing runners. It's easy to pull up an individual players yearly totals, which gives an idea of what is involved. To the extent that the system looks at things not covered by so-called advanced metrics gives it value. What we see from Dewan's +/- and the above discussion shows that Coach Polk got there first and the statisticians are trying to catch up in some areas.

As for Getz being high, a comprehensive system will favor him over a DH or over Giavotella. Savior Perez has the highest per game average of any current starter now and Billy's recent "slump" where his sacred OBP dropped has pushed him past Getzie in per game average.

"Sacrifice bunts count as 2 points but a single counts as 1?"

In other systems a double counts as 1.24x a single. Weighting is always a sore spot in statistics.

I am not a huge proponent of Lee Judge's system of scoring because the scoring weights are just atrocious. Watching a 3rd strike is penalized more than a swinging strike out for starters. Does watching a 3rd strike counts as 2 outs now? I understand people don't like it when players watch a 3rd strike but players don't walk 100 times in a year without watching some called 3rd strikes. Sacrifice bunts count as 2 points but a single counts as 1? You reward a player twice as many points for making an out as getting a hit? (This stat and the statistic for double plays are the 2 main reasons Getz is so high).
I do have to say I love reading his conversations with players and coaches. I just think the scoring system is complete garbage.

Ben, I would add that A-Rod was 6'3", Cal Ripkin 6'4", both at SS. Unless Cuthbert turns into Country Breakfast v2.0, he should be able to stick as a middle-infielder and there is where our two weakest bats are. Just trying to think outside the box a little.

Imagine a .280/20/80 second baseman? That's getting into Robinson Cano territory. and I would note that the best current 2Bs are playing for very good teams. We need a star there to compete with Cano, Pedroia, Kinsler, Kendrick, and Zobrist, all over 5.8 WAR. That much improvement at 2nd would equate to a greater improvement than of James Shields over Bruce Chen. There's more than one way to stack up WAR:)
