Chico, I think the big problem you’re running into with Butler is you’re using counting numbers like doubles and RBI. Offense has been down around the league the last couple of years, so for him to be consistent is actually showing improvement based on league averages. Even if you want to say that he’s getting worse, you’d have to take into consideration that nearly everyone else in the league is getting worse at a higher volume than he is…and since he is still just 25, I’ll go ahead and keep him on my team.

In regards to the “Sanchez trade”, I was really just throwing a name out there. I haven’t really looked closely enough at the Giants depth to know exactly what they need. All I know is that they need offense, VERY BAD!! The Giants are probably not going to offer Arbitration to Sanchez anyways, so it might not cost any prospects to bring him in.

As far as Butler is concerned, you need to look a little deeper. Butler is the best most consistent hitter on the Royals. His OPS+ this year is as high as it has ever been. He is a doubles machine, with gap to gap power.

David Ortiz is the only DH that is definitively better than Billy. Micheal Young and Victor Martinez are pretty close in overall numbers and then it is a HUGE fall off. You don’t jettison a guy like that so you can give a shot to a guy like C. Robinson. He is not a prospect and is injury/backup material.

RBI are a function of the OBP of the people batting in front of you plus your BA with RISP. This is NOT an individual statistic. Butler is the 3rd or 4th best DH in the American League. You should go look up the statistics of DH in the AL and you will see that Billy is fine just where he is.

To Ryan Braun, oops Ryan Brown. I am not giving up on Butler, by any means. I love him, esp now that he has two SBs. The facts remain that he is at his prime age and years of experience, but lacks in home runs and his doubles have decreased the last 3 years. He had a horrible first half this season in terms of RBIs. Not sure whether anyone keeps track, but he must be almost tops at LOB. Lastly, Shaq is much better than Hoch.

Chico – I’m not sure where to start with your comments. I don’t like attacking people on message boards, but there was so much in your statement that I need to respond.

Butler’s numbers are declining? He has averaged 46 doubles the past three years (including his 42 2B’s in 2011 so far). While his average is at .291 compared to his career .297 mark, that’s hardly the time to give up the ship. And to state that he should have had 110 RBI’s in this lineup is…well, it’s just wrong. If this were like lineups in the past, where Billy was the only legitimate hitting threat in the middle of the order, I would agree. But I would rather have 3 guys with 90 RBI’s than have one with 110 and two with 60-70.

I will say that Hoch is NOT an ace #1 pitcher either – rather he was our “Opening Day” starter. There’s a huge difference (see Mark Redman). But your “he’s only been an ace #1 in Omaha and college” made me laugh – it was like that Shaq quote before he won his first title:

“I’ve won everywhere I’ve ever been – except in high school and college.”

Shields is better than Hoch, but I’m not so sure that he’s the answer we’re looking for at the top of the rotation.

I wouldn’t trade C Robinson just yet, considering that some of Butler’s numbers have been declining. His doubles are declining. Considering the offense around him this season, Butler should of had 110 RBIs. Sanchez is another pitcher that will average 5 IPs, which is what most of your comments are complaining about. Hochevar is NOT at the level of Shields, who is an ace #1. Hoch has not been, except in Omaha and college.

Kyle, for the Giants, C. Robinson has very little value. Brandon Belt may have struggled as a rookie, but he is still a superior athlete. Also, B. Posey gets an occasional look at first base. There are no at bats for C. Robinson who is not athletic enough to play in any outfield. Jonathan Sanchez has great stuff, but I’m thinking more along the lines of Melky Cabrera and Brett Eibner. Eibner struggled in low A ball, and he may never be as good with the bat as he is defensively, but he is a superior athlete with decent long term potential.
