Heh, while writing this, Dayton trades Cabrera. That's great!!! I'm really looking forward to Cain in center. I think he can produce as well as Cabrera in slightly different ways. That is better defense and base running, less power but give Yost the lead off hitter he wants.

That should make the new lineup look like:
Cain
Gordon
Butler
Hosmer
Francoeur
Moustakas
Perez
Giovotella
Escobar

Considering the numbers that Hosmer and Butler's new power capacity are capable of producing, and what Moustakas will do for a whole year where he's not struggling, it wouldn't surprise me to see the outfield, corners and DH spots contribute about 23 fWAR (Butler (2.5), Hosmer (4.0), Moustakas (3.0), Gordon (6.5), Cabrera (3.5), Francoeur (3.5)). Better than that is possible, but I would be more surprised if they only came in around 20. I think second base will be better. Either Giovotella will improve or Navarro will come up and get his chance, as he seemed to be very good in spot duty. I think that gets us about 2.0 from second. I am concerned about Perez's health considering all of the catchers that got knocked out this year, but assuming no injury time, I think he can put up 3.0 and Escobar will get 2.5. That would give the everyday position players 30.5.

Pitching, I'm just not sure about, but Dayton has found some guys to surprise us in Soria and Paulino. I think he will do it again this next year, and one of the prospects popping into the rotation this year, and the bullpen will blow fewer saves, then you have a case for the staff to improve to about 18-20 fWAR.

If all of that were to happen, the Royals would have a shot at winning the division with an fWAR near the Tigers. Obviously, that is an optimistic number, although I could see a possibility for the number to go higher if the catcher and 2nd outperform the numbers I provided, and Gordon, Hosmer and Francoeur each had cold spells this year that they might not next year with better hitters providing support.

The reason I am optimistic is because of one man, and that man is Seitzer. Everything the man has touched has turned to gold, although not necessarily immediately. He spent months of the off season working with Gordon, and the man became a very good hitter. He worked with Francoeur and he had a very solid season despite 2 bad months (I think that's where Francoeur will improve in my projection above). Cabrera had his best season. Seitzer spent weeks with Escobar, and he went from below .200 to .250 in a month, and worked with Moustakas who started to turn around one of the worst rookie batting performances ever. He and Butler worked on lofting the ball and all of a sudden he was hitting bombs without a loss of batting average. After Giovotella recovers from surgery, I expect Seitzer will work with him before and during spring training, and we may reach a point where the only weakness in the line up is Escobar, and maybe given more time, Seitzer might get even more out of him.

But what I am really hopeful for is that Eiland has more success with the pitchers than McClure. The Royals pitching staff, in one of the most friendly pitchers' parks in baseball have been terrible for more than a decade. And all Eiland has to do is get them to be average this year, and it will be enough. Last year, the staff had an ERA of 4.55 before the break and after they were 4.30. I just want them to continue that progress to the point of having something average this coming season (4.08 this past year in the AL) even though I hope they are capable of better.

If the lineup produces an fWAR over 30, and the pitchers have an average ERA, the team will win more than 85 games. Just how many will depend on lots of factors like how well they hit with runners in scoring position and late in close games, how well they hold leads, as good the starters are keeping us in most games. Hopefully we can get away from having one pitcher who never seems to get any run support (Grienke in previous years, Francis this year).

So you're saying to use fWAR to intimate Jeff Francis was the best pitcher on the staff and a valid metric for measuring cost v. performance against other FA pitchers in a previous post, and thus validation for why we shouldn't pursue upgrades via signing said pitchers that won't cost prospects or handicap future flexibility was misguided?
Sabremetrics is a discriminator to differentiate in-kind performers, not rank the elements of the system.

Of course I don't think the Royals are woefully short on starting pitching if three minor leaguers emerge as front of the rotation candidates (one who regressed last year and one who, as you mentioned, is coming off arm surgery). I'm not suggesting this is what you were saying, but the point is we can't just count on that to happen and just assume we'll be good in 2013. If you're not moving forward, you're moving back. I find it unlikely that ALL of those things happen. I find it increasingly unlikely that ALL of those things will happen along with Luke Hochevar finally finding consistency and Paulino's numbers translating to actual success on the field. Also, I have as much hope for Duffy as about anyone and I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up being a solid major league pitcher, but he was not good this past year. There's at least some doubt he'll turn in into a good pitcher I would say. There always more questions than answers with developing pitching. The Royals need to keep acquiring as much as possible, however possible, b/c without bringing anyone in from the outside it appears to me that the odds say the Royals can't get to the level of success we're all hoping for.

Greg - If Mike Montgomery and Odorizzi have big years and John Lamb returns from TJ surgery by the end of 2012, would you still say the Royals are woefully short on starting pitching?

On a different note, I meant to include something in this post about consistent production offensively. The Royals piled up an impressive offensive season but, as you might expect from a young team, they were kind of feast or famine. Turning in the same offensive numbers, but in a conistent fashion might mean more wins.

This team, at the major league level, and in the minors, is woefully short on starting pitching. You can't just wait until the hitters are ready and then say 'viola' we're ready to fix the pitching! The Royals need to be aggressive in addressing their pitching situation. That doesn't necessarily mean free agents, but they need to be exploring additions to the organization that can provide help now and in the future.

I also failed to mention the lack of bench flexibility. Not a true middle infielder, the 100's of late inning at bats where Escobar or Getz had to hit, Getz on the roster in general. 1 catcher, 1 OF, and 1 2nd baseman made up the 3 man bench for a majority of the year. That would have to change moving fwd no doubt.

Very good analysis of the roster and likely 2012 contributions. Most likely the Royals will have some injuries, so the fill-ins will need to provide a good portion of the total.

I agree with the thought of waiting until the end of 2012 to add an arm. So for the 2012 season, my hope is that the #5 spot is a rotating spot of the minor league prospects - Monty, Jake, Mendoza, etc. Give them three starts, and then swap with another guy from Omaha. They'll get experience and you'll make better off-season decisions.
