"Average is better than Giavotella and Getz has been an SS most of his career, so just a matter of reps." - Jim

you said this in the post right before Clark's. Most rational people would think you are implying he played more games at SS in any given season than 2B.

Clark, as I see comments about going to the deadline and evaluating, can we get an article about what kind of SP would be available for a 3 month rental at the deadline this year. We know the FA crop is thin. What about possible deadline bait if KC is still in contention in July?

"Not once as a professional has Chris played more games at short in a given season than he has at second."

Don't think I said that, did I?

"Getz does not have the arm to play short and probably not the range, either."

Ned Yost disagrees.

"None of that seems to indicate that it is ‘just a matter of reps’ for Getz to function as a shortstop."

I get that you hate Getz. I get that I see him as an adequate LH back-up middle-infielder. I get that you love weak fielding, low-hitting 2Bs with a little pop in their bats. We aren't covering any new ground here.

Jim - check your numbers on Getz as he has 'not been a SS most of his career'. Not once as a professional has Chris played more games at short in a given season than he has at second. In 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 he played in ONE game (minor & majors combined) at short and logged just 26 innings for the Royals at short in 2011. The general consensus I have read from 'baseball men' in at least three different articles/reports is that Getz does not have the arm to play short and probably not the range, either.

"Jim, I think there’s this common perception that Getz can work a walk, but it doesn’t seem to ever really manifest itself. A 7% walk rate,"

Over twice what the four inches shorter Gio managed, and that hitting ahead of Escobar.

"He has done nothing but hit and get better at defense every season."

Didn't show that in his audition last season.

"Getz should not have a roster spot this season. He is an avg at best 2B, and can’t play the left side of the infield."

Average is better than Giavotella and Getz has been an SS most of his career, so just a matter of reps.

"They need someone that can back up SS 3B, and maybe play a little outfield. Falu, Y.Navarro"

Falu is a likely utility guy, been on his bandwagon all year due to his versatility and adequate bat. Without having to protect Adcock there will be room for two back-up infielders and a leftie with speed is useful. I still see Yam getting a good shot at 2B, as an SS he has the speed and range, seems to have some pop and possibilities for average. I think that's why the Royals got him and I think he'll get the chance to compete for the position.

"isn’t enough to justify his roster spot, IMO."

True, but it is an element in his value. If the Royals had a real 2B prospect, there would be no need for Getz, but as is he is in the mix. Had Gio actually hit and played less than brutal defense we wouldn't even be discussing Getz. That's why I consider 2B to be a systemic weakness. Our "hope" at 2nd is a sorta slow guy who hit .260 in Arkansas. Best may be to trade Clint Robinson and some others for an adequate second string 2B from another team.

With all of the contending teams that need someone that can play shortstop - Philly, Atlanta, St. Louis, Milwaukee off the top of my head - there is no way on earth that an above average defensive shortstop like Furcal is going to come here to play second base. The market is so thin free agent wise that the Twins jumped all over Jamey Carroll.

So the solution needs to come from in house for the first half of the season. I am on board the Gio-train for 300 at bats and then evaluate. Happily, that is what I expect to happen.

Gio had the surgery like 4 weeks ago, right? It is a 6-10 week recovery from the surgery, so he should be more than recovered for Spring Training. He definitely deserves the chance to play 2B. He has done nothing but hit and get better at defense every season. There is no reason to think that he won't continue improving.

I think the Navarros are the best hope for the future at our system-wide weakest position, 2B. Yam will get a shot in spring training to win the position and if he does, Gio probably starts the year in Omaha on "rehab" after his operation. I'ld keep Getz for reasons I've covered many times, not least that he's a leftie who can work a walk and steal a base. Maybe getting his hip fixed will help Gio. We'll just have to see, as he hasn't earned anything yet besides perhaps the title, "Mike Aviles 2.0".

I agree with the consensus of giving Gio until the trading deadline and make decisions then based on realistic chance of making the playoffs. If MLB goes ahead with the extra playoff team, then I'm thinking the Royals might have a small 2012 chance.

I also agree with the assessment of the Royals farm system concerning 2B options - you could list maybe eight to ten guys in line for a shot at 2B in the next few years - yet none really excite any of us. This is where and when I would put together a nice package to get an upgrade for 2B to join the Hos/Moose wave. There has to be somebody better available somewhere - go get one!
