"We all remember Willie’s version of the inside-the-park homer, hit a grounder three steps to the right of SS, beat it out, steal second and third, then score on a passed ball."
Willie actually didnt steal 3rd very often...he was confident that he could score on anything from 2nd base.... i dont know anybody smoother or faster going 1st to 3rd though

No reason why DRob and Dyson can't adjust. Dyson was getting a little better over the season at Omaha, just a matter of the right bat, right approach, and shortening the swing. When there are potentially millions of dollars in paydays on the line and Kevin Seitzer coaching, I think it is possible, if not particularly likely.

On a related note, Chris Getz is adjusting his swing and stance in order to drive the ball more. He's bigger than Mickey Mantle, so gap power may be possible. It's like chess or war, a series of moves and counter-moves.

Willie never did figure out a love for the walk, but by cutting his swing down became very adept at getting the ball in play (save for the 1980 WS). I question whether Dyson or Robinson can transition from getting the bat knocked out of their hands in the majors to being able to get the ball on most anything and run as Willie did (again, physical stature may have a lot to do with it).

Frank developed power as he matured, something I can't see Dyson, Robinson or Getz ever doing.

Certainly not easy, hitting a baseball is one of the hardest of skills to learn, much less master, but I'm old enough to remember it said of both Willie and Frank, as it now is of Dyson and D. Rob, "You can't steal 1st base." Mr. Kaufman's Baseball Academy was conceived of as a way to turn elite athletes into major league players, so it is in Dayton Moore's DNA by way of the Atlanta GM.

The key for Dyson and Robinson, like for Willie, is to draw a walk or hit grounders to the left side and run like hell, same style as Chris Getz. A bad at-bat is one that puts the ball in the air. We all remember Willie's version of the inside-the-park homer, hit a grounder three steps to the right of SS, beat it out, steal second and third, then score on a passed ball.

Jim - The comparison of Wilson and Robinson is an interesting one, although Willie was considerably bigger (I wonder, faster, too?). I think Dayton Moore has drafted a lot of Willie Wilson types, but it appears turning a 'Willie Wilson type' into an actual 'Willie Wilson' is not an easy process.

Off the field issues? Do you mean the substance abuse? Had he been on the 40 man roster at the time, he wouldn't have been suspended at all. MLB players are not tested for marijuana. I cannot find any baseball related issues on him. Tim Lincecum lights it up weekly, and no one cares.

"At the time he was a raw athlete who the Royals had hoped could learn to hit."

Like Willie Wilson and Frank White.

"Whether Jeffress is #39 or not, he is not in a good position for getting M.L. playing time."

Two weeks of command and control and dialing back the fastball to get some action and he shoots up like a skyrocket.

My reasoning for putting Jeffress at #39 is that the chances he'll harness his talents are slim at this point.
Then, if he does, how long can he maintain it???
Then, you look at how he fits into the M.L. roster - too many people in front of him at this point in the bullpen (a wildcard would be a trade that changes pecking order).
Then, you'll probably take off a pitcher when Monty is added to the 40-man - not many options (that's a good thing for the Royals).
Then, his past off-field issues are things that must be considered to some degree.
Then, lastly, as was pointed out, SOS and VinMaz are pitchers that Dayton traded for as the primary 'get' and are more likely to contribute in 2012 than Jeffress.
Whether Jeffress is #39 or not, he is not in a good position for getting M.L. playing time.

DanL, I highly disagree that Jeffress is that far down. SOS or, more likely, Mazzaro should be the first pitcher to go IMO, but since all of those guys came in trades by GMDM he'll give them a longer leash than, say, Blake Wood (last pre-Moore draft no?)

Jeffress is the hardest thrower possibly in Royals history. He may never harness it, but giving up on one of the most electric arms in baseball when he's 25 with no considerable injury history would be asinine.

Robinson doesn't strike me as someone who will ever crack a 25 man roster. He may be fast, but Jarrod Dyson is faster, and carrying both of them on the 40 man makes no sense unless Robinson has a plus bat, which it doesn't seem he ever will.
