Monty can only get better by struggling. He is now at the level where stuff isn’t enough. He cant just throw any longer. He is learning to pitch. He is the real deal.

Monty wasn’t the only underachiever amongst top pitching prospects, so that suggests the possibility of a systemic rather than individual problem. A new pitching coach and regime suggests that the Royals also see an organizational problem. We know Monty was a long-tosser, as was Hochevar in college, and we know their training was limited by an “old school” philosophy at AAA and the K. I expect several pitchers to step up this year, Hoch, Monty, and JaKKKKe the best known.

Can’t teach lefthanded and can’t teach mid 90s heat. He’ll be a top prospect based on that until he fulfills his promise or flames out due to lack of control. If teams could teach every player who lights up the gun how to pitch then drafting would be easy and Jeremy Jeffress would be a closer in Milwaukee. I’m optimistic for Monty, but he’s not a front of the rotation type starter until he proves it at MLB level.

I used to feel that way about Monty, but he keeps staying at the top of all the lists. You would think that if something seriously bad was up, at least one of the ten million scouts that put these things together would have lowered him from the top or top 3 spots on our prospect list

Maybe I’m just an optimist, but I kinda consider Monty to be a young, cost-controlled front of the rotation type starter. The pitching wave is coming, let it play out, just as the position players are. Had we been in a hurry two years ago, Hoz, Moose and Perez might not be here now.

Not saying I would necessarily, but I would consider it given the opportunity to land a young cost-controlled established front of rotation type starter.
