Getz is a symptom of how weak 2B is in the system. If Gio turns into Aviles 2.0, the next hope is Colon, who hit about the same in Springdale last year as Gio did at the K. Let's hope Gio's hip repair makes him at least an average 2B, in which case Getzie goes to Omaha.

BTW, it might have been nice of you to link the other blogger, or at least name him. For our readers:

The bad news about the Getz re-signing was it means Gio is on a very short leash. He had better come out mashing or he will be back in Omaha by May 1st.

Getz isn't near as polarizing as Yuni.

Getz might be the worst hitter getting regular at bats in the league, and he doesn't even have an alibi. The other guys in the running for the Rusty Slugger award at least used to be useful players, or they've struggled with injuries, or they're versatile, or they've not had enough chances. With Getz, we know what he is. He's a slap-hapless hitter who can't even backup SS. I don't know what's more pathetic, that GMDM re-signed Yuni, or that the signing makes some sense in this Getzian bizarro world.

It's not illegal to sign FA's or make a trade for a 2nd baseman if need be. Getz should never be a fall back plan. If he is the fall back, they fell and failed.

I'm not a Getz fan, but offensively, he and Escobar aren't that much different. We make a big deal about Escobar's defense (justifiably), but we accept his offensive limitations because he makes up for it on defense or explain in away as "he'll get better, he's still young." Getz's BA and OBP are better than Escobar's, though Escobar has more pop.

The difference is Escobar is not being pushed by anyone in the organization, so he is the clear-cut favorite at his position. Getz shouldn't be a starter unless Gio fails, at which point he might be the next be organizational option at this point. That is more of an indictment on the Royals middle infield depth right now than Getz.

The Mariners just signed Carlos Guillen to a minor league deal. Not exciting, but the Royals looked at him. Instead they have 2 guys on the 25 man roster and 3 mil allocated to Getz and Yuni. I have no doubt Yuni would of had to settle for a minor league deal and I'm not sure Getz could fetch a spring training invite.

Getz is the last of the guys who had a job until somebody better made it up thru the minors. A healthy Gio will be given the first opportunity, and if he falters later in the year, somebody else in the minors will be the next in line (or Yuni).

Getz served a purpose, got his chance, didn't produce enough to hold the job, adios Chris.

Very classy piece & one has to say quite fair in its analysis,i think theres quite a lot to appreciate in those first 600 words, perhaps more than face value gives Chrisie Getz..........I enjoy watching him anyhow & i think the key to his production in terms of team value is where you put him in the line up,complete waste of time putting him at the bottom of the order but at #2 i can live with it!

Johnny Gia will get first shot i'm though i'm sure....

.......Whats the spread for how many comments on this one then,eh? lol!
