May I add that Milwaukee was able to get Marcum and Greinke because of the talent in their farm system...something KC didn't have until recently.

There is a solid, solid chance that Hochevar, Duffy, Mendoza, Paulino, Teaford, Crow, Holland, Broxton, Herrera and some others have good pitching seasons. Does Moore get ANY credit for this chance.

And, if it does happen, doesn't that make next season all the more optimistic. I have NEVER heard of a top tier FA pitcher in recent years willing to sign in KC...or many other small markets for that matter. Greinke won't either. If we think of ourselves as the equivalent of the Pirates...which is a fair comparison...can you EVER imagine a top tier FA SP or position player choosing to sign there? I can't.

Zack: right, free agency is not the only way to spend big, and if a team is intent onkeeping home grown talent long term they will have to pay out, but the point of developing your own players is that you get 6 years of below-market cost out of them, and often through an extention can get even more years at discounted rates. And trading for players, when done well, almost always favors the team acquiring the established player. Look at what Mulwaukee has done...yes, Prince left, but they still have Gallardo and Marcum an Greinke, who, being Greinke, is not an unlikely candidate to extend at below market cost.

Instead of ridiculing what we have, let us celebrate what we don't.

I remember a recent Royals' home opener featuring Sir Sidney Ponson as the starter. And just last year, Kyle Davies, Sean O'Sullivan and Vin Mazzaro combined to pitch 170 innings of plus 7 ERA baseball. We may not have improved the top-end of the staff. But the bottom-half is unquestionably better.

As I mentioned on my blog, that alone could get us to .500.

Matt who by the way left is kind of right, most of the comments on here, including me are negative in nature about players or decisions that the Royals make about players. While I do not like the move to start Chen Music I understand that getting Hoch and Sanchez in the 2 and 3 spots may earn us more victories in the future than chen will lose for us this year. think about it if you are the "ace" of the staff you more than not will get matched up against another "ace" such as Verlander. Who do you think will win that matchup ? Verlander vs. Chen =Verlander. I think our 2 and 3 starters have a better shot at being sucessful against other teams 2 and 3 starter

Yu Darvish could have paid for himself. The Surprise stadium gift shops had his jerseys hanging. Not one Royal player up there. The media, publicity, fan interest I mean who knows? The need for a top of rotation was there. KC has been profitable...but what hasn't been done is done. The All Star game hype to go along with him could have been cool. Hearing Bruce Chen and the Kansas City Royals on opening day shouldn't scare too many folks.

Seems like Coleman's struggles have either opened the door for Teaford in the pen or assuming Mendoza is guaranteed a spot. I don't get the sense yosty is going to send Duffy down. My perception is he's waiting for a blow up from Mendoza as an excuse to try and sneak him through to the minors or proclaim him the long reliever.

FA aren't the only way to spend big. Don't have time to write much but Angels are paying a lot for Haren. Spending on Weaver. They are able to keep big dollar free agents too. How much does the Angels starting five make?
