Maybe I don’t know enough about these kids coming over from Oakland, but my first reaction to the DeJesus trade: color me disappointed.

Nope. From what little I have read, it looks the Royals did exactly what my gut told me they did: traded DeJesus for a bag of peanuts. This crap is so old. And as someone who enjoys watching DeJesus play, and has been a fan of his since nearly day one, this end to his Royals career is infuriating. I get that he was a useful trade piece, and I was resigned to seeing him go, but this trade looks like poo, and, frankly, it looks like Dayton’s sole concern was payroll because the players they received back hardly seem worth sh*t. Arggg. So angry already, and the off-season just started! Why do I still care about this team?

Honestly though, the Royals traded DeJesus, an impending Type B, at least, and maybe a Type A, plus one of the more competent players on the team, who happens to be signed for a reasonable amount, and the return looks roughly the same as what they got for Teahen. Maybe worse. Is that a fair assessment?

I’d save the anger. These are young pitchers who could turn into something. Dealing with pitchers is usually dealing in probabilities. Sure there are other pitches with a higher probability of being very good mlb players, but they probaly weren’t available for dejesus.

I’d say these pitchers are much better than what the royals got back from the teahen trade. If vin mazzaro OR Marks becomes an average mlb starter, i’d say it was a good trade.

I’m not saying it was the best trade, or that I’m 100% on board with it. But we’ll have to wait and see what we can get out of the pitchers before calling it a bust. Besides the royals only traded 1 season of dejesus. If they want him, the can re-sign him after this season.

Grienke made it clear that he mailed in his performance this year when we were losing. What’s funny to me is that he has his best season the year before and we lost almost the same amount of games this past year. I got a feeling that Grienke won’t want people to think he really isn’t that good and he’ll try again to get his name back up there with the best. Hochevar’s problem has always been innings where he gave up 3 runs or more. He’ll cruise along but hit one big inning. After he got back from his injury he avoided big innings almost all together and his walks dropped considerably. His velocity is up and I’m thinking he can have a descent season, maybe in the 3.80 ERA area. Mazzaro is a ground ball pitcher and we are a piss poor defense. He’ll be as good as our defense is. Davies is Davies (4.50 ERA after September surge). Coleman is the wild card and I hope he develops. All in all I’m glad with giving chances to young guys (if those young guys do not include O’ Sullivan). Does that make the oldest guy on that potential rotation only about 27 or 28? As long as it’s not some 35 year old guy wasting a rotation spot I’m all for it.

Greinke is still a top 5 pitcher in the AL.

O’sullivan is only 22, I’d let him develop more before giving up.

I don’t get all this talk about the Teahen trade. He was down right awful in Chicago this year. The Royals won that trade, even though Getz and Fields didn’t do much. I hate to see DDj go, but it was a good time to trade. There are alot of options for the 3-5 starters now. Mazzaro, Davies, O’Sullivan, Teaford, maybe Chen. It would be nice if they could go out and sign a #2, so they can push Hochevar back to #3. Would Jorge de la Rosa want to come back? Too much money? Hopefully Monty and Duffy start in AAA, and are ready by mid season.

Yeah, maybe I shouldn’t judge the trade so rashly. But it doesn’t look good, and the chances that either of these guys ends up being much more than slightly better than replacement level seems slim. DeJesus was a solid contributor for KC and the closest things we have had to stability for nearly a decade. He will be missed. To watch him leave for what feels like another hope and a prayer-type trade (as in, maybe these guys will outperform expectations) is maddening.

I believe that a replacement level starter is a win for the royals in this trade.
