I hated everything about this season (minor leagues aren't about this season). I hate the owner and his brain dead son, I hated Hillman still being the manager at the start, I hated the smug arrogance with nothing earned of Dayton Moore, hated listening to Ryan and Frank on TV do their act, I hated the personal on the roster, hated the way we played the game, hate the way the mainstream press covers the team, hate the dopey "we're just lucky to have a team don't be so negative" fans and hated that we still don't get it.

Last day of the season I didn't even think of the Royals, I was in a St. Louis pub watching Chelsea-Arsenal and loving it. A part of my Royal identity is gone flat and simple. I was at their first game, I was at the opening of the stadium, I was at the AS game, playoff games, WS including game 7. I was a season ticket holder until last year. I didn't attend a game at the stadium this year. Will it come back? I have no idea but it's gonna take more than the latest prospects to make me feel like being a part of it.

Oddly enough, despite the record at the end of the season, I feel that this was an overall positive year. Moore was able to turn one year players in Podsednik and Ankiel into legit prospects, was able to get the Giants to give up more than just a warm body for Guillen (and I'm sure they would have accepted less than that for him), and turned a player that wasn't in their plans in Callaspo into another prospect.

In the minors, Moustakas tore it up, there are a lot of positive signs from the pitchers, and Hosmer has looked good. The system actually has legit prospects now in all levels, and it's been a long time since the Royals could say that.

As much as I realize that any hope of competing in 2011 is a pipe dream, there should be visable steps in the right direction. Kila was given a legit shot at the end of the year and Gordon looked more comfortable each day in the field, so they could actually contribute next season. Despite DeJesus getting hurt and the continual sight of Betancourt on the diamond, it was still an overall positive 2010.

Comparing baseball and football rebuilding projects is comparing apples to oranges. The draft in the NFL is an immediate benefit whereas the benefits don't show for years in MLB. Also, while this year is uncapped, the salary cap in the NFL does not typically allow for situations like the Yankees and the rest of Major League Baseabll. It allows the smaller market/revenue teams to compete more frequently.

I said it on my blog and I'll say it here: this season has been the longest and hardest to watch of any that I can ever remember. This must be what it felt like to be an A's fan in, say, 1964. Talent was on the horizon, but it seemed like it wouldn't ever come and would never make a difference. Hopefully the 2013-2020 Royals are as good as the A's of the 70s. It'd be nice if it was in KC and not Oakland, too!
