I think that this offseason would be the perfect time to trade Greinke. One of the biggest factors is that the only other big name pitcher is Cliff Lee, like you mentioned. I think that we could get a pretty good return on him now as opposed to waiting until later. Reasons for trading him now are: 1) What if something happens like the DeJesus injury and then we get nothing and still lose him to FA 2) More teams are willing to buy in the offseason than they are right before the trade deadline. We could have potential buyers who may have fallen out of contention who are not buyers in the season. 3) What about if we get a haul of prospects and Zack thinks we have improved and still comes back and signs with us when he becomes a free agent. That would be cool!

If Grienke was with another team or a FA and we were moving in to free agent period or trade time…would be be talking about how great it would be to land a guy like Grienke to join our rotation?

1 issue with trading Grienke is the Royals youth pitching is heavily lh slanted. Hochevor and Crowe are the primary RH arms and ugh that’s a little scary as we project major league staffs- We have a slew of LH starter prospects but Grienke being an elite RH pitcher adds to his value specifically to ourselves. I want a stron RH pitcher/prospect coming back

Clark, you bring up THE key point, which is whether the Royals can re-sign Greinke or not. If they cannot, then they are not trading Greinke so much as trading 2 or less seasons of Greinke. That was the thing with Beltran. The royals were NOT re-signing beltran, so they traded a few months of beltran for what they got.

If you just say greinke is better than player x, y and z, then yes he should never be traded. But what is the value of 2 years of greinke? Is it one or two mlb average players? Is it one superstar? Is it a decent starter and a reliever? Honestly, I do not know, but that is the discussion. Because the Royals have an almost o.o% chance of getting someone who will ever be as good as greinke is now barring some astonishing luck. Thats not a comment on DM, just the nature of the transaction.

I know most of the talent that the Indians have received in their two blockbuster trades is still very young. So I haven’t heard of many of the players involved with those trades. But we have had a few years to review the Santana and Bedard trades, and it does not appear that the Twins and Orioles really fared that well in those trades. I cannot see the Royals doing much better. Remember the Beltran trade? HORRIBLE!

I have read over at royals prospects dot com all about the possible trade opportunities. They all sound enticing, and fun, but will the trade partners really give up that much talent for a headcase?

If the R’s do trade Greinke I think they should go the route of quality over quantity for the players they receive. The farm system is bubbling. It might be in KC best interest to stockpile prospects that are ML ready and can help fill holes in 2011.

Frankly, I don’t want to hear anything about trading Greinke. Not a word. Do you really expect GMDM to get the proper value for this guy?? Not a chance.

If we even act like we would trade Greinke then ESPN will just drive us crazy. Toronto had no intention of trading Halladay until they were provoked into saying they would listen to offers. Let’s not go through that.

Everybody in baseball knows that if you offer enough anybody will trade anybody. Let’s just leave the Greinke scenario at that.
