I agree with Zac. In Dawg’s second quote of Dayton, he states that it brings them more depth going into spring training. I don’t see anything wrong with bringing in guys to spring training to give them a look, especially if they might make a serviceable low PA backup. Rather have guys like this riding the pine then someone who might actually might be a full time player someday.

“He’s a real athletic kid and a right-handed bat,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “He plays second, short, third and some outfield. Potentially, he fits a similar role to what Willie filled for us.”

So there you go.

“We’ve had a chance to continue to watch him play down there,” Moore said. “He can run, he’s got some strength in the bat and he’s still young. He gives us a little more depth and versatility going into spring training.”

kcghost, the roster spot isn’t anything to complain about. Guys like Bannister are going to be off of the roster soon so there will be plenty of space to protect the guys that need it.

Another baffling move. Why would you waste a roster spot on this guy?? This means that one of our prospects has to be exposed to the Rule 5 draft. I guess if we thought GMDM was going to cut Getz it might have a glimmer of value, but so what?? You’d be better off not picking this guy up AND cutting Getz. That way you could protect an additional prospect.

Everybody should probably calm down a bit. It’s not like GMDM is paying $3M for the guy. And for $400k, it’s worth a shot – you never know if someone is a late bloomer (i.e. Betemit).

Also, believe it or not, rarely is there guy on the waiver wire with plus speed who gets on base at a .400 clip. Those guys tend not to get waived. So sifting through the waiver wire generally means picking up guys with flaws you hope you can correct. It hasn’t happened with Yuni (fixing the flaws), but it could be said that the Royals turned a career AAAA player into a serviceable major league player in Betemit (or just got lucky).

In the end, this cost them nothing. Let’s not freak out until we see what happens in April.

Like you say, let’s hold back our anger until we actually see what the Royals plan on doing with him. Also, considering that Joaquin has never collected more than 134 PAs in a single season, I’d like to think even the Royals would recognize he’s not someone who should suddendly get 400+ ABs this upcoming season.

I’d rather play someone from AAA and give our own guys a shot then keep this never ending waiver trash flowing through our lineup. Where is the sanity at?!

As long as this means that Bloomquist isn’t back, I am okay with this. I could not stand seeing Bloomquist in a game, period. As you mentioned, this may be Bloomquist part II, so my opinion may change as well. Why did we need another utility man? Don’t we have Aviles and/or Getz for up the middle? Don’t we have Fields and/or Betemit for the four-corners? This was a pretty pointless signing, and doesn’t really garner much talk.
