The difficulty of having a “dual mandate”. Yost has to try to do both things, not unlike a government simultaneously trying to create jobs and balance a budget. Manager needs to develop the kids but also needs to win enough and keep the games interesting enough to try to put fans in the seats and pay the bills. I really don’t envy Yost the position he is in, but think he’s doing a pretty good job, and think that next year the balance will shift a little more to winning, as the prospects will be more experienced.

However is it not just another example of how winning matches in the present has been sacrificed for winning matches in the future?

Surely the thought process in a match when your only two runs down should be first “how best can we win this match” not “How best can i show my young pitching staff the type of longevity i am looking for out of em”?

Nervous Ned did abuse Paulino, to what end? The bullpen has been taxed, thus the 8 man roster out there. Has Adcock been abused-not? Only guy in bullpen I worry about is Collins, and sending Teaford down could make that worse. But NN has not abused any other guys, or come close really. Even Mazarro situation was more bizarro than anything. Kid didn’t compete.

Jim,like you i’m quite a big fan of Uncle Ned Yost,i like the way he keeps things simple & everybody seems to know there role!

However as you know i tend to watch the other broadcasting feeds & Mark Grace the D-backs pundit called Yost out twice in this series,first for not having a leftie warming up when Hochevar was clearly struggling in the seventh (game 1) & Miranda & Parra coming up,”sleeping” was the term used & pushing Paulino out through one too many hitters,i could understand Paulino throwing in the eighth but as the bullpen hasnt been overworked in the previous two games + an off day Monday so no need for the ninth,its quite an imposition to use a pitcher like that just to set an “example” if that was the case i would argue?

Also the way he has handled Butler & Hosmer through the media is a bit disconcerting as well dont you think?

I don’t see that. Once Paulino made the adjustment, he cruised. At most I think Yost was using him as an example of what a major league starter should do; adjust, minimize damage, and eat innings. I’m quite optimistic about Paulino, he’s young, has good stuff, has a combative streak, and I think we’ll have him around for awhile.

Who would you prefer batting fifth, the struggling Mooose, OBP Treanor, Esky, or Getz? At the moment, patience is all we have until the trades start and some roster spots get cleared to bring up Cain and Lough and Gio, all of whom we can hope will be improvements. Until then the hope is that Melky builds on his good WAR and Frenchy comes out of his slump so as to enhance trade value. Yost has to play what he has, as he doesn’t make personnel decisions, and GMDM has other considerations beyond hope before he makes a move. Not like Cain and Gio are hitting like Hosmer or Robinson.

If I had my druthers Francoeur would bat something like 7th or 8th, but the Royals will continue to run him out there in the middle of the order like he’s a middle of the order hitter…and meanwhile his numbers for May were poor, and his numbers for June are worse than Kila’s ever were.
