Good post, Nick. Scares me when bloggers agree with me.

My take on Teaford is that he can spot start, work long relief for when Sanchez or Duffy throw 100 pitches by the 4th, and he's a successful bullpen lefty. That is versatility. I think he makes the 25 man roster and Collins starts the season in Omaha and stays there until he proves he can throw strikes and get lefties out.

It's frustrating, Fred, but in the grand scheme all of those things are pretty minor problems (except the Gordon extension which I fully expect to get done in the next week).

2 different teams have cut their losses and dumped Teahen and KC keeps giving Getz major league contracts. What a versatile bench. You have Getz that can only play 2nd base and has a pitchers bat and slugs at a 7th grade level, you have Yuni who is terrible at shortstop..never played 2nd or 3rd before..and you would never ever want him to be the pinch hitter in a late game situation, you have Dyson to pinch run, Kouz has only played 3rd in the bigs, Pena they barely trust to catch. Basically Mitch Maier is the only one with flexibility.

Is Gordon not going to get locked up or have they all ready committed to much payroll to the rotation?

Getz has an option left. Pena & Maier do not. There is a 'drop dead' date where if you release one of them prior to a certain day somewhere in advance of Opening Day the team only has to pay a percentage of the contract amount. I should look it up, but am in a lazier than normal mood today.

It just seemed inevitable when he was offered arbitration. Is there a good place to see who has options left and who doesn't? I know Getz does and will likely start in Omaha, but what about Pena, Maier, etc? Are these deals guaranteed even if they don't make the opening day 25 man roster?

Agree with Teaford being a sign of progress for the Process - to have a quality guy not being slotted in the starting rotation means we have upgraded our starting pitching. Not saying we have a rotation like the Phillies or Angles, but compared to the Royals for the past ten years - we should feel better about the future direction.

Also, I see Teaford as being viewed like Chen has been in his career - never the first guy in line for an opportunity, but just hangs around doing a good, not great, job waiting for others to falter or get an injury. As you point out, these guys are necessary to fill in on winning teams - they can get you a few extra wins each year. As a comparison, it would be like Dyson was used last year - his specialty was pinch running to get a late inning run - translates into a couple of wins. You needs these guys to win.
