As a rookie, Hosmer had 19 dingers in only 129 games. Assuming he stays healthy, he’ll see nearly 25 more starts this year. To suggest that his his HR to AB ratio will drop this season is absolutely absurd. I think he hits between 25 and 30.

Defense has more to do with than just fielding the ball. Defense away from the ball as well as positioning plays into the puzzle. I don’t know how Gia is with these issues. All I can say is that Gia did not do ANYTHING last season or during ST to force his way into the lineup. This is not a defense of Getz. He is likely not the answer. I do think Yuni ends up being the man at second until Gia forces his way into the lineup.

Projections are always easy to pick apart and kind of fun when they vary too much from the consensus viewport.

To me, the Royals’ record last year was lower than their play and talent level – and you add another year of experience and some key pitching changes, they should easily outdo last year’s record. Also consider how much talent is sitting in AAA in case of injuries – haven’t had that luxury in decades.

But as was pointed out by others, your record is based on how you play against teams that could have improved as well – just getting better doesn’t directly correlate with wins.

I don’t know why Gia is getting so much love from fans. He stunk last year and hit .214 in spring ball… I like how young he is but Getz had a really good spring and maybe they want Gia to get hot in the minors before bringing him back up.
68 wins is way too low considering we won 71 last year with Kyle Davies and SOS as our starters! I think 79 wins is a realistic number and if the starters make the improvements that I believe they will, 85 is a possibility.

Well my ESPN The Magazine projects the Royals to finish 2nd in the division behind the Tigers so guess not all geeks agree on the projections for this season. Of course statistics and statistical formulas like the ones used by the geeks are flawed as they’re biased and created by humans.

I’m 100% on board with this, but Gia is not good in the field right now and his rep has been as a marginal at best fielder ever since he was drafted. Pena has never hit .300 so no idea where that was coming from. Both players are our best option at their respective position AND provide the most likely untapped potential in my opinion. My only point was that case can be made without praising them for things they don’t actually do well.

u’re likely missing the point. Pena can hit and G can field. end of story. did u ever hear a G is unable to field report from the minors? unfortunately, in fans eyes, u make one error and u r forever a bad fielder. bother to watch G’s range and hustle effort. the bigger story is that an imaginative manager would give both these players a decent shot due to potential instead of playing lower tier players that will merely hurt the team. unknown to me if G is a major league second b. think I would have found out, given his peformance in minor leagues.

I’m as big of a Pena and Gia supporter as you’ll find, but describing Gia as ‘slick-fielding’ and Pena as ‘.300 average’ is as ludicrous as anything I’ve seen in Royal site commenting. That’s saying something.

Let’s see–they go through spring training injuring Paulino, Soria, Wood, Perez, and send their slick field .300 BA potential 2b down to Omaha claiming he’s unable to play defense, and signal they intend to play a glove at catcher instead of B Pena and his .300 average because Pena allegedly is also unable to play D. Pecota possibly is factoring in the Ned Yost factor.
