He could make it through the season. It should be based more upon how he uses the bullpen and starters as well as the lineup rather than the W/L record. If he were to be fired, I would be okay with it, but how can you expect success we have so many question marks on our team and guys like Yuni, Kendall, and Guillen starting on your team. I would consider the season a success if Guillen doesn’t produce early on and Kila gets called up to DH and spell Butler at first, Gordon comes around this season, and Aviles takes over the starting SS position making Bloomquist expendable. Then we can turn our attention to the minors and see who makes a case for joining the team in the next 1-2 years.

Royals win 75 games (that’s an optimistic guess, folks). That could get them anything from 3rd to 5th in this division. I’ll go with 4th. Hillman gets fired late, or, in the off-season. He’s an idiot. I bet Whitey Herzog laughs out loud every time he hears Hillman interviewed. Kila Ka’aihue should be in the opening day lineup–somewhere. Unbelievably (perhaps not, now that I think about it), he won’t be.

I know only three questions were asked, but thinking about this team (and the team we will likely have for the next three-to-four seasons) I cannot resist: Remember when Dayton Moore was hired and everyone thought 2010 was a realistic timeframe for contending in the division? Then that was pushed back to 2012. And now we are talking 2014 before any serious contention is likely. Ugghh! Same old crap. Things are getting better, we’ll get there soon, just a bit more time. Meanwhile I look at the high minors and am completely underwhelmed. Then I look at the low minors and see a bunch of solid/excellent pitching but no truly outstanding position players. I cannot wait until 2014, when I am certain we will be asked to wait two or three more seasons for our ship to come in.

@ Ted: 2010 probably wasn’t a realistic goal for contending. The cupboard was so bare when GMDM came on board that he had to rebuild the organization from scratch. It didn’t help matters, though, that KC passed up on players who were closer to ML-ready (such as Justin Smoak) and went with high-risk, high-upside choices such as Eric Hosmer. Drafting 18-year-olds isn’t going to rebuild your Major League roster quickly.

Again, this team comes into the season with more “ifs” than sure things. DeJesus will hit his normal .280, Grienke and Butler have probably established themselves, and Podsednik will probably hit at least .280.
The “ifs”: if Gordon breaks out, if Ankiel plays a full season without injury (although I would rather see what Maier can do), if Hochevar rises to the next level, if Meche is healthy, if Getz repeats and improves on his rookie year, if Cruz, Farnsworth, and Colon have good years, if Aviles plays back to his old form, if Betancourt’s new conditioning program improves his game, and if Guillen stays healthy and accepts his DH role………..if 80% of those “ifs” are positive, then we
might win 75-77 games. Otherwise, we’re headed to about the same number of wins
as last season – 67.
Minnesota, Cleveland, and the White Sox all helped themselves more than we did.
KC will finish last again. Davies is a headcase, lacks motivation, and will be replaced by Crow or someone out of the bullpen by July. Either Getz or Betancourt will be replaced by Aviles by June. If Gordon doesn’t start the season well, then he’ll be replaced by Callaspo by June.
Hillman now has the team speed and defense that supposedly suit his coaching style. If he doesn’t bring in at least 75 wins, then he’ll be fired at the end of this season. But I do think Seitzer’s hitting instruction will have an effect on this team and their team average and OBP will improve remarkably. Forget the power though.
